|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Katherine I. Higginbottom, who recently |
4 | | passed away; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, She was born on November 20, 1923, the first child |
6 | | of Ulysses and Pearl Skaggs; she was cared for as a youngster |
7 | | by her paternal grandparents, Ellen and William Tetter, on |
8 | | their farm in Hopkins Park; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, As she grew she continued to help her grandparents |
10 | | on the farm, developing a love for animals and a serious |
11 | | industriousness; she would help pick blueberries, raise the |
12 | | animals, cut out paper dolls, and play mumbley peg with a |
13 | | pocket knife; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, She graduated from St. Anne High School in St. |
15 | | Anne, and walked alone down the aisle at graduation because her |
16 | | white classmate would not walk with her; she later went on a |
17 | | double date with her sister and Elzie Higginbottom; she |
18 | | pronounced that she would rather be reading than be on the date |
19 | | but things went smoothly and together Elzie and she shared 60 |
20 | | years of wedded bliss; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, She worked at the Joliet Arsenal, stacking mortar |

1 | | rounds and eventually being promoted to a clerical position; |
2 | | during this time she and her husband ran a small produce store, |
3 | | where she sold fish; in 1956, her husband opened a laundromat |
4 | | known as the Morgan Park Laundromat, which is still in |
5 | | operation today; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband; her 3 |
7 | | sisters and her 3 brothers; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Katherine Higginbottom is survived by her sons, |
9 | | Elzie Jr. (Deborah) and Eric (Shontae); her grandchildren, |
10 | | William, Carter, Caroline, and Parker; her sisters and |
11 | | brothers, Vivian Lee, Madaline Skaggs Graves, Roy Skaggs, |
12 | | Kenneth Skaggs, Joan C. Wells, and Sandra Sangster; a host of |
13 | | nieces and nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews; |
14 | | therefore, be it

15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL |
16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
17 | | her family and friends, the passing of Katherine I. |
18 | | Higginbottom; and be it further
|
19 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
20 | | presented to the family of Katherine I. Higginbottom as a |
21 | | symbol of our sincere sympathy.
