| 1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly are | ||||||
| 3 | saddened to learn of the death of Mary Jo Arndt of Lombard, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on September 24, 2011; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, She was a 1951 graduate of Glenbard West High | ||||||
| 6 | School and a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a | ||||||
| 7 | B.S. in Education; she was a former teacher in Villa Park and | ||||||
| 8 | Urbana; she had been a newspaper columnist; and she was the | ||||||
| 9 | managing partner and hospital administrator of the Lombard | ||||||
| 10 | Veterinary Hospital with her husband; together, they | ||||||
| 11 | established the Lombard Veterinary Hospital in 1959; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, She was an integral part of the York Township | ||||||
| 13 | Republican Women's Organization for 45 years and served as a | ||||||
| 14 | former Republican national committeewoman for Illinois; she | ||||||
| 15 | served as past president of the National Federation of | ||||||
| 16 | Republican Women; she was a pioneer in efforts to increase | ||||||
| 17 | opportunities for women in politics, government, and | ||||||
| 18 | education; in addition, she founded the Illinois Republican | ||||||
| 19 | Women's Roundtable in 1989, established the Illinois Lincoln | ||||||
| 20 | Excellence in Public Service Series, conducted many seminars on | ||||||
| 21 | various facets of political organization and party structure, | ||||||
| 22 | and lent her skills to campaign efforts in almost every county | ||||||
| 23 | in Illinois; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, She served as publicity chairperson for the | ||||||
| 2 | Lombard Minutemen, was a Girl Scout leader, executive secretary | ||||||
| 3 | for the Lombard Lilac Parade Committee, a Rotary Ann,and was | ||||||
| 4 | actively involved with the Maple Street Chapel Preservation | ||||||
| 5 | Society, the YWCA, and the Lombard Chamber of Commerce; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan appointed her to be a | ||||||
| 7 | member of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships | ||||||
| 8 | and she was reappointed by President Bush; she served as a | ||||||
| 9 | member of the Republican National Committee for Illinois from | ||||||
| 10 | 1988 to 2008 and was elected to the RNC Executive Committee | ||||||
| 11 | representing the Midwestern Region from 2005 to 2008; she was | ||||||
| 12 | the chairman of the Illinois Women for McCain campaign and was | ||||||
| 13 | a member of the McCain National Hispanic Outreach Team; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, She recently completed 6 years on the board of | ||||||
| 15 | directors of American Women for International Understanding | ||||||
| 16 | and was a member and adviser of the Republican National | ||||||
| 17 | Hispanic Assembly of Illinois; she was a member of the Xilin | ||||||
| 18 | Asian Association Board of Directors; she was twice elected by | ||||||
| 19 | the primary voters of the 6th Congressional District as their | ||||||
| 20 | State central committeeman, in 1982 and 1986; and | ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, In 2008, she was elected vice chair emeritus of | ||||||
| 22 | the Illinois Republican State Committee, she was a member of | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | the Illinois Governor's Commission on the Status of Women; she | ||||||
| 2 | served on the Working Group on Balancing Work and Family; she | ||||||
| 3 | represented President Bush as an observer of the Romanian | ||||||
| 4 | elections in May of 1990; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, She had a U.S. Senate confirmed appointment to the | ||||||
| 6 | National Advisory Council on Women's Education Programs during | ||||||
| 7 | the Reagan Administration, where she served as chairman of the | ||||||
| 8 | Women's Educational Equity Act Committee; she was a member of | ||||||
| 9 | the Advisory Committee to the Illinois State Superintendent of | ||||||
| 10 | Schools; she also served on the Illinois Commission for the | ||||||
| 11 | Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Today's Chicago Woman twice named Mrs. Arndt a | ||||||
| 13 | "Power Personality", a woman making a difference in | ||||||
| 14 | Chicagoland's business and social environment; she served as a | ||||||
| 15 | member of the U.S. Small Business Administration National | ||||||
| 16 | Advisory Council from 2001 to 2007 and was selected by the | ||||||
| 17 | Foundation for Women's Resources as one of 100 women to | ||||||
| 18 | participate in Leadership America;
she was a member of the | ||||||
| 19 | National Board of Directors of Leadership America from 2001 to | ||||||
| 20 | 2006, and was a member of the Advisory Board of Leadership | ||||||
| 21 | Illinois and of Save the Patient; the Gallup Organization | ||||||
| 22 | selected her as a "Visionary Leader for the 21st Century" and | ||||||
| 23 | awarded her a full scholarship to the Gallup Leadership | ||||||
| 24 | Institute; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Mary Jo Arndt is survived by her husband, Dr. Paul | ||||||
| 2 | W., DVM; her daughters, Dr. Kristi L. Arndt, Ph.D., DVM, Kerri | ||||||
| 3 | A. (Russell) Roselli, and Dr. Georgianne, DVM (Gregory) Ludwig; | ||||||
| 4 | her grandchildren, Gregory R. Ludwig, Phillip P. Roselli, | ||||||
| 5 | Graceanne N. Ludwig, and Kaleigh A. Roselli; her cousin, Betty | ||||||
| 6 | Bussema; and many other relatives, friends, and pets; | ||||||
| 7 | therefore, be it

| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 9 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
| 10 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn, along with her family | ||||||
| 11 | and friends, the passing of Mary Jo Arndt; and be it further
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the family of Mary Jo Arndt as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 14 | sincere sympathy.
