HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly are 
3pleased to honor the men and women of law enforcement who 
4worked during the NATO Summit in Chicago; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, The list of law enforcement agencies that helped 
6during the Summit include: the Chicago Police Department led by 
7Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, the Illinois 
8State Police, the Cook County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, the 
9Secret Service, Homeland Security, the Illinois National 
10Guard, the United States Army, law enforcement officers from 
11around the State, law enforcement officers from neighboring 
12states, as well as many others; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, With over a week of daily rallies and marches, law 
14enforcement  officers worked in high temperatures, cumbered 
15with heavy equipment and standing on hot pavement, and in some 
16cases working longer than 12-hour shifts; the officers showed 
17patience and used crowd control tactics that worked, with few 
18injuries or arrests; and
 
19    WHEREAS,         President Barack Obama, Chicago Mayor Rahm 
20Emanuel, and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh  Rasmussen all 
21praised the 12,000-member police force, with President Obama 
22saying that "Chicago performed magnificently"; and

1    WHEREAS, Because of the diligent and dedication of law 
2enforcement officers, there was little vandalism or injuries  
3during the NATO Summit, making for a peaceful opportunity for 
4important meetings between heads of state and other 
5dignitaries; therefore, be it



  
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
7NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 
8SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we honor the men and women of 
9law enforcement who worked during the NATO Summit and thank 
10them for their dedication to the safety and welfare of others; 
11and be it further
  
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 
13presented to representatives of the Chicago Police Department, 
14Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, the Illinois 
15State Police, the Cook County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, the 
16Secret Service, Homeland Security, the Illinois National 
17Guard, the United States Army, and other law enforcement 
18agencies involved in the NATO Summit.
