HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are pleased to recognize Fethullah Gulen for 
4ongoing and inspirational contributions to the promotion of 
5global peace and understanding; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, A Turkish scholar, author, poet, preacher, and 
7educational activist, Fethullah Gulen has inspired a worldwide 
8social movement that promotes humanistic values and service and 
9is known as the Hizmet Movement or the Gulen Movement; and

  
 
10    WHEREAS, Based on the principle that each human being is of 
11value, regardless of background, faith, or culture, the Gulen 
12Movement offers a multifaceted approach to seeking world peace; 
13it places a strong emphasis on intercultural understanding and 
14the embracing of differences; it values compassionate acts of 
15care and concern; and it promotes the importance of education 
16in laying the groundwork for fostering better relationship 
17between diverse populations; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, The Gulen Movement emphasizes the core concept 
19that peace is a function of tolerance and dialogue; it offers 
20"Living to let others live" as the foundation of a life of 
21altruistic service and calls on the younger generation to 
22combine intellectual enlightenment with spirituality to make

1the world a better place; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, The strength of the universal values promoted by 
3the movement has led to the creation of the Niagara Foundation 
4in Chicago, which promotes academic research as well as 
5grassroots activity as a means to bring about positive social 
6change and dialogue; Fethullah Gulen and the movement for 
7social justice he inspired are truly deserving of recognition 
8for their impact on our global society; therefore, be it
  
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
11we commend Fethullah Gulen for his dedication  to working 
12towards a better world through education, service, tolerance, 
13and the free exchange of ideas and extend to him best wished 
14for continued success in all his endeavors; and be it further
  
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
16presented to Fethullah Gulen as a symbol of our respect and 
17esteem.
