| 2 | | WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the |
| 3 | | Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the |
| 4 | | death of
DeLois Barrett Campbell, who passed away on August 2, |
| 5 | | 2011; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell was born in Chicago in |
| 7 | | 1926; she grew up on the South Side with famous gospel singer |
| 8 | | Mahalia Jackson and composer Thomas A. Dorsey as neighbors; her |
| 9 | | father also served as a deacon at a local church and their |
| 10 | | mother sang in the chorus, which reinforced her great love of |
| 11 | | gospel music; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell was a founding member of |
| 13 | | the Barrett Sisters, Chicago's legendary gospel trio; the |
| 14 | | Barrett Sisters began singing and harmonizing gospel music |
| 15 | | during the 1940s in a religious family of 10 children on the |
| 16 | | South Side of Chicago; upon the death of their cousin, Jonnie |
| 17 | | Mae Hudson, sister Rodessa Porter joined the trio, creating the |
| 18 | | Barrett Sisters; the group's growing reputation earned them a |
| 19 | | recording debut in 1963, with the album "Jesus Loves Me"; the |
| 20 | | group subsequently attained international attention for their |
| 21 | | work in the acclaimed 1982 documentary "Say Amen, Somebody", |
| 22 | | which yielded appearances on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" and |
| 23 | | more than 50 world tours; and
