HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate all those associated with the operation of Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire on receiving, from the U.S. Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification (LEED) for existing buildings; and

WHEREAS, On October 18, 2011, Stevenson High School became the first high school in the country to receive the LEED gold-level certification for existing buildings; LEED is a certification program that is the national benchmark for design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings; and

WHEREAS, The high school earned points in the LEED rating system that measures water and energy conservation; indoor air quality; management of waste and recyclable materials; the use of environmentally preferred products; and sustainable purchasing policies; and

WHEREAS, Adlai E. Stevenson High School was also named by U.S. News and World report as one of the best high schools in the country for 2011; and

WHEREAS, Since 2007, the school has saved almost $1,000,000 in energy costs by adhering to LEED standards; and

WHEREAS, Through the LEED program, Stevenson High School students have had an opportunity to educate a community, save natural resources, reduce the school's operating costs, and inspire other schools to achieve the same; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate everyone involved in the day-to-day operations of Adlai E. Stevenson High School on receiving the LEED certification and for setting an example for schools throughout Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Adlai E. Stevenson High School Principal Dr. John Carter as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
