| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of LeRoy A. | ||||||
| 4 | Ufkes, who passed away on October 18, 2011; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, He was born September 8, 1923 in Bear Creek | ||||||
| 6 | Township, Hancock County, the son of Fred J. and Tena M. | ||||||
| 7 | Johnson Ufkes; on December 28, 1956, he married Joan Aleshire | ||||||
| 8 | at St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, He attended Basco High School for 3 years, and | ||||||
| 10 | later graduated from Carthage High School in 1940; he received | ||||||
| 11 | his bachelors degree from Carthage College in Carthage; he | ||||||
| 12 | attended Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas and Louisiana | ||||||
| 13 | State University, majoring in engineering; he received his | ||||||
| 14 | Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Iowa Law | ||||||
| 15 | School in Iowa City, Iowa in 1950; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, He was a lieutenant in the United States Army and | ||||||
| 17 | served in Italy in World War II; he served on numerous State | ||||||
| 18 | Commissions, including the Commission for the Status of Women, | ||||||
| 19 | the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission, and the Illinois | ||||||
| 20 | Court of Claims; he was Special Assistant Attorney General for | ||||||
| 21 | over 10 years with the State of Illinois; he served an interim | ||||||
| 22 | term in the Illinois State Legislature; he was a member of the | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Hancock County Bar Association, and he was an Illinois delegate | ||||||
| 2 | for numerous Republican Conventions; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, He was the director of the Board of Farmers State | ||||||
| 4 | Bank of Ferris, the Union Bank of Carthage, and Memorial | ||||||
| 5 | Hospital and Nursing Home; throughout his professional career | ||||||
| 6 | he was a member of numerous other boards and commissions | ||||||
| 7 | related to the practice of law; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, He was a longtime attorney for the Church of Jesus | ||||||
| 9 | Christ of the Latter Day Saints and a lifetime advocate for | ||||||
| 10 | justice and fairness for the poor; he was also involved with | ||||||
| 11 | the local Humane Society and enjoyed time with his best friend | ||||||
| 12 | and cat Little Miss Amy; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, He was a member of the Western Illinois University | ||||||
| 14 | Western Athletic and Leatherneck Clubs and was an inductee into | ||||||
| 15 | the Western Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame; he was | ||||||
| 16 | one of the charter athletic full scholarship donors of the | ||||||
| 17 | Western Athletic Club through the Western Illinois University | ||||||
| 18 | Foundation; he was a season ticket holder for St. Louis Rams | ||||||
| 19 | football and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes; and he was a | ||||||
| 20 | lifetime Cincinnati Reds fan; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, LeRoy Ufkes is survived by his wife, Joan; his | ||||||
| 22 | daughter, Dr. Fran Ufkes-Daniels and son-in-law, Dr. Lacy | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Daniels; and his sister, Ruth I. Ufkes; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 2 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 3 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 4 | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | ||||||
| 5 | LeRoy Ufkes; and be it further
| ||||||
| 6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 7 | presented to the family of LeRoy Ufkes as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 8 | sincere sympathy.
