| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the crew of the |
| 4 | | Polish LOT Airlines flight that successfully landed a Boeing |
| 5 | | 767 without the use of landing gear and without any casualties |
| 6 | | aboard the flight; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, During a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Warsaw, |
| 8 | | Poland, a Polish LOT Airlines flight, carrying 231 passengers, |
| 9 | | encountered a problem with the plane's hydraulic system that |
| 10 | | kept the landing gear from deploying; without being able to use |
| 11 | | any of the plane's 3 wheels, the plane would have to land on |
| 12 | | its belly, a dangerous situation that makes it impossible to |
| 13 | | change the plane's direction after it sets down on the tarmac |
| 14 | | and difficult to land safely; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Despite not having any operable wheels on the |
| 16 | | aircraft, Tadeusz Wrona, the captain of the LOT aircraft, and |
| 17 | | his crew decided to continue the flight to Warsaw's Frederic |
| 18 | | Chopin airport and attempt to land, in order to decrease the |
| 19 | | risk of fire by using up the plane's heavy fuel load; once they |
| 20 | | arrived in Warsaw, the crew was able to land the aircraft on |
| 21 | | its belly so smoothly that many on board thought it had landed |
| 22 | | on its wheels; the plane suffered no major structural damage |
| 23 | | and there were no casualties; and
