| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to recognize Carl Knous for his |
| 4 | | service to our country as a member of the United States Marine |
| 5 | | Corps; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Carl Knous entered the United States Marine Corps |
| 7 | | at the age of 17, right after he graduated from trade school; |
| 8 | | he served with the Marine Corps for over 2 years and was |
| 9 | | deployed overseas for 19 months at the time of his discharge on |
| 10 | | November 11, 1946; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, After going through basic training in San Diego, |
| 12 | | Carl Knous was deployed to the South Pacific theatre during |
| 13 | | World War II; along the way, he and his unit avoided enemy |
| 14 | | patrols and made several stops before landing on Okinawa; he |
| 15 | | took part in the fighting on Okinawa for a month under horrible |
| 16 | | conditions; by the end of the fighting, he was one of the only |
| 17 | | 5 survivors in his unit of 250 soldiers to emerge unharmed; his |
| 18 | | unit was slated to go to Tokyo following the battle, but was |
| 19 | | sent back to the US after the dropping of the atomic bomb; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, After returning to the United States, Carl Knous |
| 21 | | was sent to Chicago before returning to Petersburg; he then |
| 22 | | began working with his father 3 days after returning home; and
