| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Beulah E. Posten of | ||||||
| 4 | Chicago on her centennial birthday; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Beulah Esmilda Clark was born on March 8,1922 in | ||||||
| 6 | Colon, Panama; in 1920, at the age of 8, Beulah,
along with her | ||||||
| 7 | mother, Lillian, emigrated from Panama to the United States; | ||||||
| 8 | and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, In Chicago, she married Cornelius Sankey, a | ||||||
| 10 | carpenter who worked on the Panama Canal; he emigrated from
| ||||||
| 11 | Panama to the United States a couple of years prior to | ||||||
| 12 | establish a home for Beulah and her mother; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, She was educated at Oakland Elementary School and | ||||||
| 14 | Lucy
Flowers Technical High School; with the encouragement of a | ||||||
| 15 | mentor, she
enrolled in the Nurses Training School at Provident | ||||||
| 16 | Hospital, where she became a certified nurse and
worked and | ||||||
| 17 | trained for several years at Provident and Cook County | ||||||
| 18 | Hospitals; she went on to have a successful nursing career at | ||||||
| 19 | the University of Chicago Hospitals,
where she was employed for | ||||||
| 20 | over 30 years, serving as
head nurse of the Dermatology | ||||||
| 21 | Department and the Eye Clinic; and
| ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, She was an active member of the black nursing | ||||||
| 2 | sorority Lambda Pi Alpha, Beta Mu Chapter Chicago; she sought | ||||||
| 3 | citizenship and was naturalized in 1954; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, She
has been a faithful member of Saint Thaddeus | ||||||
| 5 | Catholic Church in Chicago for over 35 years,
where she was | ||||||
| 6 | also a contributing member of the church's Knights of Peter | ||||||
| 7 | Claver Ladies Auxiliary for
over 20 years; she also | ||||||
| 8 | participated in the church's choir and outreach ministry; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, She was a member of the 71st Street YMCA's Golden | ||||||
| 10 | Agers Social Club; she has a passion for singing, dancing, and | ||||||
| 11 | swimming;
she has 2 children, Diane P. Sims and John Jeffrey, | ||||||
| 12 | Jr, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; | ||||||
| 13 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 15 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 16 | we congratulate Beulah Posten on her 100th birthday and wish | ||||||
| 17 | her good health and happiness for the future; and be it further
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to Beulah Posten as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
| 20 | esteem.
