| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the | ||||||
| 4 | Village of Hazel Crest on the occasion of the village's 100th | ||||||
| 5 | anniversary of incorporation; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Hazel Crest was first settled in 1870 in a farming | ||||||
| 7 | community known as South Harvey; an enterprising newspaper | ||||||
| 8 | editor named William McClintock moved to South Harvey from Ohio | ||||||
| 9 | in 1890 and built a depot so that the local milk train would | ||||||
| 10 | stop there; this single move opened up transportation | ||||||
| 11 | opportunities to Chicago and beyond; the little depot which he | ||||||
| 12 | built served as the area's first real estate office, a public | ||||||
| 13 | meeting place, a Sunday School room, a day school, and | ||||||
| 14 | eventually, the post office; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, In 1900, South Harvey's name was changed to Hazel | ||||||
| 16 | Crest to reflect the large numbers of hazelnut bushes that grew | ||||||
| 17 | south of town; Hazel Crest was subsequently incorporated in | ||||||
| 18 | 1912; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, The citizens of Hazel Crest have come together | ||||||
| 20 | repeatedly to construct significant developments for the | ||||||
| 21 | village, including the construction of the Community Church in | ||||||
| 22 | 1894 and the 1984 adaptation of an elementary school building, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | which has now become the Martin J. Kauchak Municipal Center, | ||||||
| 2 | named for President Kauchak, who served the village for 20 | ||||||
| 3 | years; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Hazel Crest has been honored for its spirit of | ||||||
| 5 | community volunteerism with 2 Governor's Home Town Awards in | ||||||
| 6 | 2002 and 2008; the village's most recent award was earned after | ||||||
| 7 | volunteers organized a community-wide Christmas gift drive and | ||||||
| 8 | presented nearly 100 children-in-need with the special gifts | ||||||
| 9 | they requested; residents also participate in the village's | ||||||
| 10 | annual Hazelnut Festival and Black History Month Celebration; | ||||||
| 11 | and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Hazel Crest has been named a Tree City USA for 25 | ||||||
| 13 | consecutive years by The National Arbor Day Foundation; the | ||||||
| 14 | village has also been the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth | ||||||
| 15 | Award for 14 years for demonstrating progress in its community | ||||||
| 16 | forestry program; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, The citizens of the Village of Hazel Crest serve | ||||||
| 18 | as models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the | ||||||
| 19 | people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 21 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 22 | we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Hazel Crest on | ||||||

| 1 | the occasion of the village's 100th anniversary of | ||||||
| 2 | incorporation and wish them continued success and happiness in | ||||||
| 3 | the future; and be it further
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 5 | presented to the Village of Hazel Crest as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 6 | esteem and respect.
