| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of Hazel |
| 4 | | Crest on the Village's centennial; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, In 1890, William McClintock purchased 80 acres of |
| 6 | | land between Homewood and Harvey; he platted the land and |
| 7 | | registered it as South Harvey; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, A depot was built, opening up transportation to |
| 9 | | Chicago and beyond; the depot later served as a real estate |
| 10 | | office, a public meeting place, a Sunday school room, a day |
| 11 | | school, and eventually the post office; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, After being annexed by Homewood, the community |
| 13 | | fought back, and led a campaign to de-annex from Homewood; a |
| 14 | | petition drive changed the name to Hazel Crest, due to the |
| 15 | | rolling nature of the land and the abundance of hazelnut |
| 16 | | bushes; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1912, the citizens voted for incorporation; a |
| 18 | | municipal service, a volunteer fire department, a public |
| 19 | | school, and St. Anne Catholic Church all soon came about after |
| 20 | | incorporation; the Illinois Central Railroad later built the |
| 21 | | Markham freight yards, bringing Polish, Italian, and Serbian |
