HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of Hazel 
4Crest on the Village's centennial; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1890, William McClintock purchased 80 acres of 
6land between Homewood and Harvey; he platted the land and 
7registered it as South Harvey; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, A depot was built, opening up transportation to 
9Chicago and beyond; the depot later served as a real estate 
10office, a public meeting place, a Sunday school room, a day 
11school, and eventually the post office; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, After being annexed by Homewood, the community 
13fought back, and led a campaign to de-annex from Homewood; a 
14petition drive changed the name to Hazel Crest, due to the 
15rolling nature of the land and the abundance of hazelnut 
16bushes; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1912, the citizens voted for incorporation; a 
18municipal service, a volunteer fire department, a public 
19school, and St. Anne Catholic Church all soon came about after 
20incorporation; the Illinois Central Railroad later built the 
21Markham freight yards, bringing Polish, Italian, and Serbian

1workers into Hazel Crest; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, The Village added many subdivisions, including 
3Pottawatomie Hills, Highlands, Pacesetter, Appletree, Village 
4West, Dynasty Lake, and several upscale developments over the 
5years; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The 2010 census places the population of Hazel 
7Crest at 14,100; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The community was one of the first to have a Human 
9Relations Commission, now known as the Community Relations 
10Commission; the Village has also been recognized for the 
11volunteer spirit of its residents with 2 Governor's Home Town 
12Awards; therefore, be it
  
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
14NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
15we congratulate the people of Hazel Crest and wish them 
16continued good health and happiness for years to come; and be 
17it further
  
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19presented to Hazel Crest Mayor Dr. Robert B. Donaldson
as a 
20symbol of our respect and esteem.
