HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former
4State Senator Robert Mitchler, who passed away on April 19,
52012; and
 
6    WHEREAS, He leaves behind a legacy of community service, a
7career as a politician and businessman, and a life as an
8advocate of the military and the veterans who proudly served
9their country; and
 
10    WHEREAS, He proudly served his country in the United States
11Navy during World War II, with assignments including amphibious
12and minesweeping operations; in the Korean War, he served as a
13Chief Petty Officer; and
 
14    WHEREAS, He rose through the ranks of the United States
15Navy and was assigned to the United Nations Military Armistice
16Command as a stenographer at the Panmunjom armistice talks; and
 
17    WHEREAS, He was very politically active in his community,
18serving as a Precinct Committeeman for 60 years and as an
19Illinois State Senator from 1964 to 1981; and
 
20    WHEREAS, During his tenure as Senator, Governor Jim

1Thompson appointed him to serve as the Legislative Liaison to
2the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He was also appointed by Governor Jim Edgar to the
4rank of Permanent Captain in the Illinois Naval Militia as
5Military and Naval Aide and subsequently reappointed by
6Governor George Ryan; and
 
7    WHEREAS, He was a life member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge
8No. 254 A.F. & A. M., a 32nd degree life member of the Scottish
9Rite Order, and the First Ceremonial Master of the Tebala
10Shrine in Rockford; and
 
11    WHEREAS, He was the driving force behind the establishment
12of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at East
13Aurora High School; and
 
14    WHEREAS, He served as the National Director of the Navy
15League and was elected as the National Director Emeritus, the
16Vice-President of the Kendall County Republican Central
17Committee, the Kendall County Young Republican Organization,
18the Illinois Republican Veterans League, the Illinois Police
19Association, and as a member of the Board of Trustees for
20Jennings Terrace in Aurora; and
 
21    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, John and

1Clara Mitchler; his sister, Helen Virginia Mitchler; his
2brother, William G. Mitchler; and his daughter-in-law, Maria
3Aragon; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Former State Senator Robert Mitchler is survived
5by his wife, Helen Mitchler; his children, John (Kathy)
6Mitchler, Kurt (Sharon Buntain) Mitchler, and Heidi (Daniel)
7Lyjak; his grandchildren, Briana, Scott, Haley, Joseph,
8Natalie, Olivia, Matthew, Garrick, and Trevor; his
9sister-in-law, Cecile Mitchler; as well as several nieces and
10nephews; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
14former Senator Robert Mitchler; we remember this great man who
15faithfully served his community and the State of Illinois for
16many years; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of former State Senator Robert Mitchler
19as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
