| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy was co-founded by Robert Todd | ||||||
| 3 | Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, in 1887; the academy | ||||||
| 4 | has earned a reputation of excellence for 125 years by changing | ||||||
| 5 | the lives of over 18,000 children; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy integrates a rigorous academic | ||||||
| 7 | program with a nurturing boarding model that teaches social and | ||||||
| 8 | leadership skills in a structured environment, including | ||||||
| 9 | on-campus cottages that house students along with houseparents | ||||||
| 10 | who provide the necessary discipline, support, and nurturing in | ||||||
| 11 | a family-like community; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy students are willing and able to | ||||||
| 13 | learn, but are constrained by difficult socio-economic | ||||||
| 14 | situations; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Over the course of its history, Glenwood Academy | ||||||
| 16 | has responded to the pressing needs of children and society at | ||||||
| 17 | large through its many name changes, including the Illinois | ||||||
| 18 | Training School for Boys in 1887, the Glenwood Manual Training | ||||||
| 19 | School in 1911, and the Glenwood School for Boys in 1948; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, In 2002, the Trustees of Glenwood School for Boys | ||||||
| 21 | expanded the mission of the school to serve both at-risk boys | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | and girls, thereby becoming known as Glenwood School for Boys | ||||||
| 2 | and Girls; and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy is the only boarding school of | ||||||
| 4 | its kind that provides a safe and nurturing environment for | ||||||
| 5 | at-risk children throughout the Chicagoland area by offering a | ||||||
| 6 | holistic program for children to Live, Learn, and Succeed; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Children generally come to Glenwood Academy with | ||||||
| 8 | academic achievement scores 2 years below grade level; with the | ||||||
| 9 | support of teachers and staff, 85% of eighth grade students in | ||||||
| 10 | the class of 2011 scored at or above the national average | ||||||
| 11 | percentile in reading, math, and language; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, 95% of all the students that graduate from | ||||||
| 13 | Glenwood Academy's program go on to higher education, the | ||||||
| 14 | military, or specialized training schools; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy continues to be successful in | ||||||
| 16 | raising the academic success of at-risk boys and girls from the | ||||||
| 17 | Chicagoland area; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Glenwood Academy is currently celebrating its | ||||||
| 19 | 125th anniversary; on May 19, 2012, the academy will celebrate | ||||||
| 20 | its 116th Flag Day and Graduation ceremonies; therefore, be it
| ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 2 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 3 | we designate the date of May 19, 2012 as Glenwood Academy Day | ||||||
| 4 | in the State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this State to | ||||||
| 5 | celebrate Glenwood's success on behalf of at-risk children and | ||||||
| 6 | their families, its distinguished alumni, and the students it | ||||||
| 7 | will serve in the future; and be it further
| ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 9 | presented to Glenwood Academy as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
| 10 | respect.
