HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is home to 2 national organization of great significance to professional nutritionists throughout the United States, and during the coming year both organizations celebrate important milestones; and

WHEREAS, The American Nutrition Association is a non-profit association that is dedicated to promoting optimal health through nutrition and wellness education among both nutrition professionals and the public, and in 2012 will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding in 1972; and

WHEREAS, The Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists is a premiere professional credentialing body for professional nutritionists, and early next year will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding in 1993; and

WHEREAS, The services provided by professional nutritionists are foundational to the prevention of chronic disease; and

WHEREAS, With chronic disease in the United States having reached epidemic proportions, the need for professional nutritionists has never been greater; and

WHEREAS, Chronic diseases are now the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, accounting for an estimated 7 out of 10 deaths in the country; and

WHEREAS, It has been estimated that 133 million Americans, almost one out of every 2 adults, now has at least one chronic disease; and

WHEREAS, Obesity has become a major health concern in the United States, with one in every 3 adults and almost one in every 5 youth between the ages of 6 and 19 being obese; and

WHEREAS, It is estimated that 75% of all healthcare costs in the United States are due to chronic disease conditions, with Americans now spending an estimated 16.2% of the national Gross Domestic Product on healthcare; and

WHEREAS, A great many chronic diseases are preventable with targeted nutrition and lifestyle approaches, which professional nutritionists foster through their daily work; and

WHEREAS, The importance of the work of professional nutritionists is held in high and growing esteem throughout the State of Illinois and the United States; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize and commend the American Nutrition Association and the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists on their 40th and 20th anniversaries; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the American Nutrition Association and the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists in recognition of their having achieved these important milestones.
