HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Representative Monique D. Davis and the Illinois 
3House of Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the 
4death of Ora A. Higgins, who passed away on July 25, 2012; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Ora Higgins was born in Birmingham, Alabama on 
6September 24, 1910; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Ora Higgins was the first African American 
8personnel director for Spiegel's Inc. and served as a teacher 
9for 31 years at Dunbar Vocational Evening School; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Ora Higgins was the founder of the Ora Higgins 
11Youth Foundation; she celebrated her 101st birthday at the 35th 
12anniversary of the Ora Higgins Youth Scholarship Awards Dinner 
13on October 8, 2011, at the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills; her 
14foundation has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to 
15high school graduates throughout the Chicago area; and
  
 
16    WHEREAS, Ora Higgins was the great-great aunt of First Lady 
17Michelle Obama; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, Ora Higgins is survived by her two children, Dr. 
19Murrell Higgins Duster and Rev. William "Chico" Higgins; her 13 
20grandchildren; her 26 great-grandchildren; and her 3

1great-great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
  
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
3NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
4we mourn the passing of Ora Higgins, and we extend our sincere 
5condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved 
6her; and be it further
  
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
8presented to the family of Ora Higgins as an expression of our 
9deepest sympathy.
