| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the |
| 4 | | City of Highland on the occasion of the city's 175th |
| 5 | | anniversary of its founding; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The City of Highland was founded by Swiss |
| 7 | | immigrants in 1831, but was originally named Helvetia (New |
| 8 | | Switzerland); it was in 1836, when Joseph Semple, a member of |
| 9 | | the Illinois House of Representatives from Alton, pushed to |
| 10 | | change the name to Highland because the area reminded him of |
| 11 | | where he grew up in Scotland; this push led to the formal |
| 12 | | renaming of the town to Highland in 1837; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Louis A. Latzer was an early resident of Highland; |
| 14 | | he perfected the process of condensing milk, which made it more |
| 15 | | accessible to the masses; he is known as the "Father of Pet |
| 16 | | Milk"; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The hard working people of Highland have also |
| 18 | | achieved what many cities never do, effectively accommodating |
| 19 | | several industries while still keeping their small town vibe; |

| 21 | | WHEREAS, The City of Highland also offers many other |
