| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Dorolyn |
| 4 | | Academy of Music and Dr. Dorothy L. Bounds on the occasion of |
| 5 | | the 30th anniversary of its founding on October 20, 2012; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music will celebrate its |
| 7 | | anniversary at the Center for the Performing Arts at Dorolyn, |
| 8 | | in Oak Park; the event will be hosted by Dr. Quincy L. Johnson, |
| 9 | | D.D.S.; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music was founded on |
| 11 | | September 24, 1982; it has countless reasons to celebrate its |
| 12 | | 30 years of service, but the academy is most proud of the vital |
| 13 | | role it has played in nurturing and developing the artistic |
| 14 | | gifts of thousands of children and youth across the Chicago |
| 15 | | area, many of whom now enjoy successful careers in the music |
| 16 | | industry; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music provides technique |
| 18 | | and performance curriculum in voice, piano, organ, percussion, |
| 19 | | woodwind and brass instruments, guitar, dance, and theater |
| 20 | | performance to the communities of Oak Park, River Forest, |
| 21 | | Forest Park, and other parts of the Chicago area; and |
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music is the recipient of |
| 2 | | the State of Illinois Treasurer's Award, in recognition of |
| 3 | | outstanding dedication and commitment to the African-American |
| 4 | | communities of Illinois, the Oak Park Development Corporation |
| 5 | | Nicholas Award for Community Commitment, and the Oak Park Area |
| 6 | | Arts Council Best of the Class Award for Community Outreach; |
| 7 | | the academy has been commended
by the Rotary Club of Oak Park |
| 8 | | and River Forest for its commitment to community service; it is |
| 9 | | an active member of the Oak Park Area Arts Council and the Oak |
| 10 | | Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music is helmed by Dr. |
| 12 | | Dorothy L. Bounds, a gifted and compassionate leader who brings |
| 13 | | over 50 years of performing arts experience; her vision was to |
| 14 | | establish a one-of-a-kind music institution, with professional |
| 15 | | instructors who would capture and catapult the curiosity of |
| 16 | | children and youth who chose to explore the world of music, all |
| 17 | | at minimal-to-no-cost; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy L. Bounds has degrees and honors from |
| 19 | | McKinley Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi; she is a |
| 20 | | recipient of the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year from |
| 21 | | Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Alpha Lambda Chapter, Chicago; |
| 22 | | she received the Outstanding African-American Woman of the Year |
| 23 | | Award, presented by "We Women" Western Chicago Area; she has |
| 24 | | been profiled by Channel 7 network and Harry Porterfield as |
|

| 1 | | "Someone You Should Know"; she is listed in Who's Who in |
| 2 | | Professional and Executive Women; she is an Athena Award |
| 3 | | nominee for outstanding support of the Goals for Professional |
| 4 | | Women by Oak park's 19th Century Women's Club and a nominee for |
| 5 | | the board of directors of the Oak Park Chamber of Commerce; she |
| 6 | | has been Entrepreneur of the Year for Illinois and Northwest |
| 7 | | Indiana, received The Jefferson Award from NBC Channel 5, and |
| 8 | | received special recognition from the City of Chicago and Mayor |
| 9 | | Richard J. Daley for outstanding contributions and years of |
| 10 | | service to the Chicago area; therefore, be it

| 11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 12 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 13 | | we congratulate The Dorolyn Academy of Music and Dr. Dorothy L. |
| 14 | | Bounds on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding |
| 15 | | of Dorolyn Academy; and be it further
|
| 16 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 17 | | presented to Dr. Bounds and The Dorolyn Academy as an |
| 18 | | expression of our esteem and respect.
