| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize and honor the 106th |
| 4 | | anniversary of the founding of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, |
| 5 | | Incorporated, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter |
| 6 | | fraternity established for African-Americans; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded on |
| 8 | | December 4, 1906, by seven young men, respectfully known as the |
| 9 | | Seven Jewels, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, |
| 11 | | Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison |
| 12 | | Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy, the |
| 13 | | founders of the Fraternity, recognized the need for a strong |
| 14 | | bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country; |
| 15 | | and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The aims of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity are |
| 17 | | manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is to |
| 19 | | develop leaders and promote brotherhood and academic |
| 20 | | excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our |
| 21 | | communities; and |
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, For 106 years, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has |
| 2 | | played a fundamental role in the positive development of the |
| 3 | | character and education of more than 200,000 men; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha have shared |
| 5 | | countless friendships and a common belief in the founding |
| 6 | | ideals of the fraternity; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Alumni from Alpha Phi Alpha include many |
| 8 | | noteworthy leaders in the areas of government, business, |
| 9 | | entertainment, science, and higher education; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has 364 college |
| 11 | | campus chapters and 337 alumni chapters in the United States of |
| 12 | | America, the District of Columbia, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, |
| 13 | | and Europe and 138 Chapters in the Midwestern Region, including |
| 14 | | 30 in the District of Illinois; the Theta Chapter (1910) and |
| 15 | | the Xi Lambda Chapter (1924), both of Chicago, were the first |
| 16 | | college and alumni chapters, respectively, in the State of |
| 17 | | Illinois; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity continues to enrich |
| 19 | | the lives of its members, who, in turn, provide service and |
| 20 | | advocacy for the communities with a commitment to service and |
| 21 | | the uplifting of humanity; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 2 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 3 | | we recognize and honor the 106th anniversary of the founding of |
| 4 | | the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; and be it further
|
| 5 | | RESOLVED, That we commend all Alpha Phi Alpha brothers, |
| 6 | | past and present, for their bond of friendship, common ideals |
| 7 | | and beliefs, and service to the community; and be it further |
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That we express our best wishes for the Alpha Phi |
| 9 | | Alpha Fraternity's continued success and growth; and be it |
| 10 | | further |
| 11 | | RESOLVED, That December 4, 2012 is officially proclaimed as |
| 12 | | Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the Great State of Illinois; and be it |
| 13 | | further |
| 14 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
| 15 | | delivered to the Midwestern Regional Vice President and the |
| 16 | | Assistant Vice President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, |
| 17 | | Incorporated, the Illinois District Director of Alpha Phi Alpha |
| 18 | | Fraternity, Incorporated, the Assistant Illinois District |
| 19 | | Director and the Presidents of the 30 College and Alumni |
| 20 | | Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated of the |
| 21 | | Great District of Illinois.
