| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the | ||||||
| 4 | administration, faculty, and students of Highland Community | ||||||
| 5 | College on the occasion of the institution's 50th anniversary; | ||||||
| 6 | and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, After being established by public referendum in | ||||||
| 8 | November of 1961, Freeport Community College held its first | ||||||
| 9 | classes in September of 1962 at their temporary location on the | ||||||
| 10 | campus of Freeport High School; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, In the fall of 1966, a successful referendum held | ||||||
| 12 | in 15 school districts in Stephenson, Ogle, Jo Daviess, and | ||||||
| 13 | Carroll Counties established District No. 519; the name | ||||||
| 14 | Highland Community College was taken the following year; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, With the generous support of their community and | ||||||
| 16 | the Highland Community College Foundation - the first such | ||||||
| 17 | organization in the State of Illinois - Highland Community | ||||||
| 18 | College moved to their first permanent facilities on the site | ||||||
| 19 | of the Parker-Taft farm west of Freeport in 1971; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, The Sports Center, built in 1979 as a result of a | ||||||
| 21 | partnership between Highland Community College and the YMCA of | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Northwest Illinois, was the first such cooperative endeavor | ||||||
| 2 | between a community college and a regional YMCA; and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, In 2003, the HCC West campus was established in | ||||||
| 4 | Elizabeth to further meet the needs of the residents in the | ||||||
| 5 | western region of District No. 519; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, In 2008, Highland Community College established | ||||||
| 7 | the first associate of applied science degree in wind turbine | ||||||
| 8 | technology and erected a dedicated Wind Turbine Technician | ||||||
| 9 | Training Center to house the program; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, A new state-of-the-art addition to the Natural | ||||||
| 11 | Science and Health Center, the Ray and Betty Stamm Health | ||||||
| 12 | Science Nursing Wing, was built in 2009 to house the growing | ||||||
| 13 | number of students and program offerings in nursing and allied | ||||||
| 14 | health disciplines; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Highland Community College has continually | ||||||
| 16 | adapted to meet the needs of students and residents of | ||||||
| 17 | northwest Illinois by offering more than 60 programs of applied | ||||||
| 18 | and transfer degrees, community education, and business | ||||||
| 19 | training, as well as theatre, visual arts, and music | ||||||
| 20 | opportunities for the community; and | ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, As a proud member of the Illinois Community | ||||||

| 1 | College System, Highland Community College will celebrate 50 | ||||||
| 2 | years of excellent service to the communities of northwest | ||||||
| 3 | Illinois during the 2012-2013 academic year; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 5 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 6 | we congratulate the administration, faculty, and students of | ||||||
| 7 | Highland Community College on the occasion of the institution's | ||||||
| 8 | 50th anniversary of providing quality education and wish them | ||||||
| 9 | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
| 10 | further

| 11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 12 | presented to Highland Community College as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 13 | esteem and respect.
