SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Sally Page of Peoria, who passed away on October 15, 2011; and

WHEREAS, She had founding roles at Lakeview Museum, Planned Parenthood, the Arts and Sciences Council, the Human Service Center, and other central Illinois agencies and institutions; her community leadership spanned 7 decades, from her work during World War II to establish the Central Volunteer Bureau to her passionate support for the Riverfront Museum; and

WHEREAS, She chaired the Lakeview Museum council's museum committee, led the fund drive, was president when Lakeview opened in 1965 and 13 years later led the fund drive to expand the museum; 4 decades after groundbreaking for the museum, she was happy to be present when the development agreement for the new Riverfront Museum was signed; and

WHEREAS, She also treasured the collaboration that merged 4 mental health and addiction-related organizations into the Human Service Center in 1976; as president of the Comprehensive Mental Health Board in the early 1970s, she understood that many needing mental health treatment suffered related problems, such as addiction, and would fare better if cared for under one roof; in 1986, the Human Service Center named its counseling family home after her; and

WHEREAS, She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 29, 1917, to Justus and Hildegard Kirby and grew up in Los Angeles; she graduated from Smith College and married Ted Page in 1939; and

WHEREAS, While her husband served in World War II, she helped fill in the gaps on the home front by organizing and presiding over the Central Volunteer Bureau, the first of its kind in Peoria; she championed the establishment of a Planned Parenthood chapter in Peoria in the 1950s; in 1968, when a busing program was put in place to desegregate District 150 schools, she led an effort to enlist volunteer tutors to help struggling students in their new schools; and

WHEREAS, She was also involved in the South Side Mission, Common Place, the United Way, the Junior League of Peoria, the Girl Scouts, Illinois Advocates of the Arts, the Lay Ministries Committee of the Peoria Area Council of Churches, and the First Baptist Church of Peoria, where she was a 72-year member; and

WHEREAS, In 1978, she was among 11 recipients statewide of the inaugural Governors Award for the Arts; among her other awards was the YWCA Legend Award; she and her husband were the first husband and wife team to be named Citizen of the Year by B'nai B'rith in 1979; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; and

WHEREAS, Sally Page is survived by her children, Sally Snyder, Ted (Sally) Barrett-Page, and Susan (John) Miller; her 10 grandchildren; and her 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Sally Page; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sally Page as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
