| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Maynard Wishner of Chicago, who passed |
| 4 | | away on December 19, 2011; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, He was born and grew up in Chicago; he earned |
| 6 | | undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Chicago; |
| 7 | | from 1947 to 1952, he worked for the Chicago Mayor's Commission |
| 8 | | on Human Relations, as head of the commission's department of |
| 9 | | law and order and then as acting director; he then was |
| 10 | | appointed chief city prosecutor for the city's Law Department; |
| 11 | | and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, He was an attorney with the firm of Cole, Wishner, |
| 13 | | Epstein & Manilow before joining Walter E. Heller & Co., a |
| 14 | | finance company, where he eventually served as president and |
| 15 | | chief operating officer; he retired in 1985; he also acted in |
| 16 | | Yiddish theater; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Wishner was president of the Chicago chapter |
| 18 | | of the American Jewish Committee from 1961 to 1963 and its |
| 19 | | national president from 1980 to 1983; he continued to serve as |
| 20 | | a member of the organization's board of governors; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS,
He was a president of what is now the Jewish |

| 1 | | Federations of North America and chaired what is now the Jewish |
| 2 | | Council for Public Affairs; he also held prominent positions in |
| 3 | | the Chicago Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation, the Jewish |
| 4 | | Community Relations Council, and Jewish Family and Community |
| 5 | | Service; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Wishner received numerous awards, including |
| 7 | | the Julius Rosenwald Memorial Award, which is the Chicago |
| 8 | | Jewish Federation's highest award, and the AJC's Mensch Award; |
| 9 | | in addition, Mr. Wishner's work to improve Greek-Jewish |
| 10 | | relations led him to receive the Frizis Award from the Hellenic |
| 11 | | American Leadership Conference; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Maynard Wishner is survived by his wife, Elaine; |
| 13 | | his daughters, Ellen Kenemore, Jane Wishner, and Mimi Wishner |
| 14 | | Segel; his sister, Iona Wishner Levenfeld; his 3 sons-in-law, |
| 15 | | his 8 grandchildren, and his 3 great-grandchildren; therefore, |
| 16 | | be it
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
| 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
| 19 | | his family and friends, the passing of Maynard Wishner; and be |
| 20 | | it further

| 21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 22 | | presented to the family of Maynard Wishner as a symbol of our |
