SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez, a United States Marine
3Corps member, was killed in action while nobly serving his
4country conducting combat operations in the Helmand Province,
5Afghanistan; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was part of the 1st Combat
7Engineer Battalion of the 1st Marine Division out of Camp
8Pendleton, California; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was born and raised in Elgin,
10where he attended Harriet Gifford Elementary, Abbott Middle
11School, and Larkin High School; by the time he was a junior at
12Larkin High School, he knew he wanted to be a Marine; and
 
13    WHEREAS, His desire to serve his country stemmed from his
14family history of service, as his father, Enrique Martinez, is
15a longtime Navy reservist and his aunt served in the Army; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez married his high school
17sweetheart, Julianna in 2008; and then graduated early from
18high school in 2009; a few weeks after turning 18, Corporal
19Martinez enlisted in the Marine Corps and left for boot camp
20the next month; and

1    WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was on his second deployment to
2Afghanistan when he was killed; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez hoped to start a family with his
4wife as soon as he completed his service and dreamed of someday
5becoming a firefighter; and
 
6    WHEREAS, His faith was very important to Corporal Martinez,
7who attended Life Changers International Church; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez is survived by his wife,
9Julianna Martinez; his mother, Socorro Bethke; his stepfather,
10Jim Bethke; his father, Enrique Martinez; and his siblings:
11Eileen Bethke, James Bethke, Jenny Martinez, Brandon Martinez,
12Nicholas Martinez, and Ilyana Martinez; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family, friends, and a grateful nation, the passing of
16Corporal Alex Martinez; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Corporal Alex
18Martinez and his willingness to serve his country, which led to
19him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
