2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that we pay honor and respect
|
3 | | to the truly great individuals who have served our country, and
|
4 | | in doing so, have gone above and beyond the call of duty to
|
5 | | make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Major
Reid B. Nannen of Hopedale passed away on |
7 | | March 1, 2014
due to injuries sustained while training at |
8 | | TOPGUN Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nevada; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen was born in Peoria on October 15, 1981 |
10 | | to Dale P. and Mary Ann Nannen; he married Sarah M. Simpson on |
11 | | August 6, 2005 in Peoria; he graduated from Olympia High
School |
12 | | in 2000, where he was a 2-year captain of the swim team, |
13 | | section leader for the drum line, member of the Elite Eight
|
14 | | baseball teams in 1999 and 2000, and an Illinois State Scholar; |
15 | | following his high school graduation, he attended the
|
16 | | University of Illinois, where he was a member of the NROTC
|
17 | | battalion and participated in the Marching Illini Drum Line
|
18 | | NROTC Drill Team; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen was commissioned a 2nd LT. in May of
|
20 | | 2004 and attended The Basic School with Delta Company class
|
21 | | 4-04; after TBS, he attended Naval Aviation Training with
|

1 | | MATSG-21 at NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field, and NAS Meridian;
|
2 | | he received his Wings of Gold in February of 2007 and was
|
3 | | selected to fly F/A-18 Hornets; he moved to Lemoore,
|
4 | | California, for fleet replacement training with VFA-125 in May |
5 | | of 2007; after finishing carrier qualification, he reported for
|
6 | | duty with MAG-11 at MCAS Miramarl; in June of 2008, he joined
|
7 | | VMFA (AW)-232 and deployed from May to December of 2010 in
|
8 | | support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.2 to Kandahar Airfield
|
9 | | in Afghanistan; while with the Red Devils, he served as NATOPS,
|
10 | | Ground Safety, Airframes, and Embark Officers; he attended
|
11 | | Tactical Air Control Party training in May of 2011 and
|
12 | | proceeded to Camp Pendleton, California, for duty as a forward
|
13 | | air controller with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance
|
14 | | battalion; he again deployed to Afghanistan from October of
|
15 | | 2011 to May of 2012 with 1st LAR in support of OEF 12.1 in the
|
16 | | lower Helmand River Valley in Afghanistan; he supported every
|
17 | | company within 1st LAR and conducted the first company level
|
18 | | helicopter operations within the battle space; he returned to
|
19 | | Camp Pendleton and subsequently detached from the battalion for
|
20 | | refresher training at VMFAT-101; in August of 2012, he
|
21 | | transferred to VMFA (AW)-242, where he served as the assistant
|
22 | | operations officer; and |
23 | | WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen's awards and decorations include the
|
24 | | NATO Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Global War
|
25 | | on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the
|

1 | | National Defense Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy |
2 | | Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Air
|
3 | | Medal; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen is survived by his wife, Sarah; |
5 | | children, Peter, Curtis, Betsy, and Isla Nannen; his
parents, |
6 | | Dale and Mary Ann Nannen; 2 sisters, Bethany Nannen Miller and |
7 | | Briana
Nannen; and maternal grandparents, Raymond and Elaine |
8 | | Hays; therefore, be it
|
9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
10 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE |
11 | | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of |
12 | | Interstate 155 between the Delavan Exit (15) and the Hopedale |
13 | | Exit (19) as the "Maj. Reid B. Nannen Memorial Highway"; and be |
14 | | it further |
15 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
|
16 | | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
|
17 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
|
18 | | giving notice of the name the "Maj. Reid B. Nannen Memorial |
19 | | Highway"; and be it further
|
20 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to the family of Maj. Nannen and the Secretary of the |
22 | | Illinois Department of Transportation.
