| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The Executive Board of the International Olympic | ||||||
| 3 | Committee has proposed eliminating the sport of wrestling from | ||||||
| 4 | the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020; the proposal | ||||||
| 5 | remains to be approved or disapproved by the full Committee at | ||||||
| 6 | its September 2013 general assembly; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Wrestling was one of the original sports of the | ||||||
| 8 | ancient Greek Olympic Games and of the first modern Olympic | ||||||
| 9 | Games; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Wrestling has been a traditional strength of the | ||||||
| 11 | United States Olympic team; 124 medals have been awarded to the | ||||||
| 12 | United States throughout the history of the Olympic Games; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The sport of wrestling builds great strength, not | ||||||
| 14 | only of body, but also of character; wrestling also helps to | ||||||
| 15 | instill the virtues of self-confidence, self-discipline, | ||||||
| 16 | courage, and sportsmanship; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Wrestling has produced many outstanding national | ||||||
| 18 | leaders, including Presidents, United States Supreme Court | ||||||
| 19 | Justices, United States Senators, members of Congress, and | ||||||
| 20 | business and military leaders, as well as many outstanding | ||||||
| 21 | leaders in the State of Illinois; and | ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, There are thousands of student athletes in the | ||||||
| 2 | State of Illinois that participate in wrestling at the high | ||||||
| 3 | school and collegiate level; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Many of these young Illinoisans dream of | ||||||
| 5 | representing the United States on the international stage at | ||||||
| 6 | the Olympic Games and would be on the cusp of realizing their | ||||||
| 7 | Olympic dreams in 2020, when the International Olympic | ||||||
| 8 | Committee is set to remove one of the most time-honored, | ||||||
| 9 | traditional sporting events not only on the Summer Olympics | ||||||
| 10 | Program, but in the history of sport; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 12 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 13 | we urge the International Olympic Committee to reinstate | ||||||
| 14 | wrestling as a core sport of the Summer Olympic Games; and be | ||||||
| 15 | it further

| 16 | RESOLVED, That we thank the United States Olympic Committee | ||||||
| 17 | for its continued support of wrestling and urges it to work | ||||||
| 18 | actively toward the reinstatement of Olympic wrestling; and be | ||||||
| 19 | it further | ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | delivered to Richard Bender, Executive Director of USA | ||||||
