HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, May 14 marks the first annual Childhood Apraxia of
3Speech Awareness Day, which seeks to raise state and national
4awareness about Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a particularly
5difficult, persistent, and severe neurological speech disorder
6in youngsters; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) causes affected
8children to have extreme difficulty planning and producing the
9precise, highly refined, and specific series of movements of
10the tongue, lips, jaw, and palate that are necessary in
11producing clear, intelligible speech; it is among the most
12severe of speech and communication problems in children; and
 
13    WHEREAS, While the act of learning to speak comes
14effortlessly to most children, those with apraxia require years
15of intensive speech therapy and have lengthy struggles to
16communicate; although not life-threatening, the disorder is
17life-altering, as families are left to cope with the emotional,
18physical, and financial challenges of having a child diagnosed
19with CAS; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Every child should be afforded their best
21opportunity to develop speech and every child deserves a voice;
22with early intervention and appropriate therapy, most children

1with CAS will learn to communicate with their very own voices;
2these children, as well as their families, deserve our highest
3respect for their effort, determination, and resilience in the
4face of such obstacles; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we designate May 14, 2013 as Apraxia Awareness Day in the State
8of Illinois to raise awareness about CAS and support the goals
9of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
