2 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, having served the | ||||||
3 | community of Little Village, the City of
Chicago, and the State | ||||||
4 | of Illinois, was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for | ||||||
5 | North America on
April 15, 2013; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Goldman Environmental Prize, established in | ||||||
7 | 1989, is an honor given annually to
grassroots activists around | ||||||
8 | the world who demonstrate courage and commitment to protect the | ||||||
9 | natural
environment; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto is the first Illinois | ||||||
11 | recipient of the Global Environmental Prize in the history of | ||||||
12 | the award; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto worked for over a decade | ||||||
14 | to retire the Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants and | ||||||
15 | bring environmental justice to her community; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, a life-long resident of | ||||||
17 | the southwest side of Chicago, began her community activism | ||||||
18 | when her son Anthony had his first asthma attack; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto served as a community | ||||||
20 | organizer for the Little Village Environmental Justice |

1 | Organization, educating her fellow community members about the | ||||||
2 | health and pollution concerns of Little Village; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Proving herself as a leader, Kimberly | ||||||
4 | Wasserman-Nieto was appointed executive director of the Little | ||||||
5 | Village Environmental Justice Organization in 2004; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto, the Little Village | ||||||
7 | Environmental Justice Organization, and the Chicago Clean | ||||||
8 | Power Coalition were able to build support in their community | ||||||
9 | and across Chicago for the city to take action on coal-fired | ||||||
10 | power plants; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, With additional leadership from Chicago Mayor | ||||||
12 | Rahm Emanuel, the coal-fired plants were retired in September | ||||||
13 | 2012; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto continues her work to | ||||||
15 | strengthen and improve the health of her community; therefore, | ||||||
16 | be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we recognize and congratulate Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto for | ||||||
20 | winning the Goldman Environmental Prize, and for her dedicated | ||||||
21 | service to the residents of Little Village, the City of |

1 | Chicago, and the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to Kimberly Wasserman-Nieto as an expression of our | ||||||
4 | esteem and respect.
