HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Glen Ellyn Area 
4Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on 36 years of 
5service in the western suburbs of Chicago and the 100-year 
6anniversary of the national organization; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was 
8founded January 13, 1913, by 22 African-American women on the 
9campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C.; the 
10organization now has more than 300,000 members and nearly 1,000 
11chapters worldwide; it is the single largest African-American 
12women's organization in the United States; January 1, 2013, 
13marked the beginning of a year-long centennial anniversary 
14celebration of the sorority's founding; and
  
 
15    WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta  was 
16chartered on January 23, 1977; it is one of the largest 
17chapters in the State of Illinois with more than 300 members; 
18they serve areas from Oak Park to Dekalb to Romeoville to 
19Melrose Park and cover 6 counties including Cook, DuPage, Kane, 
20Kendall, Will, and DeKalb; and
  
 
21    WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta has 
22been a prominent entity in the western suburbs of Chicago by

1providing voter registration drives, health screenings, 
2financial planning seminars, healthy lifestyle 
3recommendations, scholarships to college bound high school 
4students, and educational programs for youth; and
  
 
  
5    WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta 
6provides its services at no cost to the community and are 
7funded by membership dues and grants received from the Minerva 
8Educational Foundation; members provide hundreds of volunteer 
9hours throughout the year to assist with these programs; 
10therefore, be it
  
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
12NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
13we congratulate the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta 
14Sigma Theta Sorority on 36 years of service in the western 
15suburbs of Chicago and 100 years of global service by the 
16national organization, Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated; and be 
17it further
  
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19presented to the Glen Ellyn Area chapter of Delta Sigma Theta 
20Sorority as an expression of our esteem and respect.
