| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Nick Curley of | ||||||
| 4 | Chicago on receiving the 2013 Hearts & Hugs Youth Advocate | ||||||
| 5 | Award; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, This year's award was given to Nick Curley due to | ||||||
| 7 | the success of his project to raise awareness for epilepsy and | ||||||
| 8 | Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP); each year, as part | ||||||
| 9 | of an annual family tradition, he would tell his parents what | ||||||
| 10 | kind of volunteer project he wanted to participate in to help | ||||||
| 11 | others; he is 8 years old and has just completed the 3rd grade | ||||||
| 12 | at Immaculate Conception School; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, For his most recent project, Nick Curley decided | ||||||
| 14 | to combine the 3 things he loves the most: skating on a hockey | ||||||
| 15 | rink, helping others, and having fun; he and his parents | ||||||
| 16 | coordinated a plan for him to ice skate 100 miles, 5 miles at a | ||||||
| 17 | time, at 20 ice rinks around the State; he kicked off his | ||||||
| 18 | journey with 5 miles on the rink of the Glenview Stars, his | ||||||
| 19 | home ice; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Nick Curley skated with teams ranging from Loyola | ||||||
| 21 | Academy and Barrington High School to the Rockford Ice Hogs; he | ||||||
| 22 | skated at the Allstate Arena, the United Center, and Soldier | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Field, where he took a victory lap during the College Hockey | ||||||
| 2 | Classic in February 2013; NHL hall-of-famer Denis Savard joined | ||||||
| 3 | him for miles 46 through 50 and Congressman Mike Quigley skated | ||||||
| 4 | with him twice; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Nick Curley's skating campaign received national | ||||||
| 6 | exposure; he was featured in an article on Yahoo! Sports and | ||||||
| 7 | was involved in stories on CBS Chicago News and NBC Chicago | ||||||
| 8 | News; and | ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Nick Curley completed his 1,000th lap during the | ||||||
| 10 | intermission of a Chicago Wolves game; he raised nearly $40,000 | ||||||
| 11 | for the Danny Did Foundation, an organization whose goals are | ||||||
| 12 | advancing awareness of SUDEP and mainstreaming seizure | ||||||
| 13 | detection and seizure prediction devices that may assist in | ||||||
| 14 | preventing deaths caused by seizures; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Nick Curley's success was due in part to a great | ||||||
| 16 | team around him that supported him at every step of the way, | ||||||
| 17 | including his parents, Laura and Brian; his coaches, Kevin | ||||||
| 18 | Delaney and Rob Emme; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. | ||||||
| 19 | Sonnefeldt; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 21 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 22 | we congratulate Nick Curley on receiving the 2013 Hearts & Hugs | ||||||

| 1 | Youth Advocate Award; and be it further

| 2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
