| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Cabrini Green | ||||||
| 4 | Legal Aid on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its | ||||||
| 5 | founding; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Cabrini Green Legal Aid was founded in 1973 by | ||||||
| 7 | Chuck Hogren with funding from Tyndale House Publishers; the | ||||||
| 8 | funding was obtained by Bill Leslie, the pastor of the LaSalle | ||||||
| 9 | Street Church; for 24 years, Chuck Hogren served as Cabrini | ||||||
| 10 | Green Legal Aid's Executive Director; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Cabrini Green Legal Aid first operated as a | ||||||
| 12 | general purpose law firm for the residents of the Chicago | ||||||
| 13 | Housing Authority's Cabrini-Green housing project, providing | ||||||
| 14 | representation that ranged from advocating for tenants' rights | ||||||
| 15 | to finding alternatives to gangs for Cabrini-Green youth; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, In 1996, when the Chicago Housing Authority began | ||||||
| 17 | to demolish the Cabrini-Green housing project, Cabrini Green | ||||||
| 18 | Legal Aid expanded its mission to encompass the entire City of | ||||||
| 19 | Chicago, specializing in 3 under-served practice areas: | ||||||
| 20 | housing, family law, and criminal defense; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, With the modernization of Illinois' Expungement | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | laws in 2003, Cabrini Green Legal Aid started its Criminal | ||||||
| 2 | Records Program, one of the State's first efforts to help | ||||||
| 3 | individuals expunge or seal their arrest or conviction records; | ||||||
| 4 | Cabrini Green Legal Aid opened its Expungement Help Desk at the | ||||||
| 5 | Daley Center in 2005, which now serves more than 4,000 | ||||||
| 6 | individuals annually; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, In response to the ever-growing need for legal | ||||||
| 8 | services, Cabrini Green Legal Aid launched the Client Support | ||||||
| 9 | Services Program in 2006 to help integrate professional legal | ||||||
| 10 | and social services to enhance legal outcomes and expand its | ||||||
| 11 | impact beyond crisis support; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, A celebration of Cabrini Green Legal Aid's 40th | ||||||
| 13 | anniversary will be held September 26, 2013, at Union Station | ||||||
| 14 | in Chicago; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 16 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 17 | we congratulate Cabrini Green Legal Aid on the 40th anniversary | ||||||
| 18 | of its founding; and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to Cabrini Green Legal Aid as an expression of our | ||||||
| 21 | esteem and respect.
