HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Fiesta del Sol is the largest Latino festival in 
3the Midwest; and
  
 
4    WHEREAS, Fiesta del Sol is an admission-free event, 
5bringing patrons, sponsors, and vendors from across the nation; 
6it has an art and culture pavilion, a children's area, an 
7immigration booth, educational offerings, entertainment, a 
8health booth, and the Copa Fiesta del Sol; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Fiesta del Sol is organized by the Pilsen 
10Neighbors Community Council, with the funds from the festival 
11designated for community organizing, an ACT Prep Program, 
12educational scholarships, a legal clinic, an education summit, 
13and a university round table; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, The Pilsen Neighbors Community Council, founded 
15in 1954, is a non-profit organization located in the heart of 
16Pilsen and Fiesta del Sol is the Pilsen Neighbors Community 
17Council's primary fundraising event to underwrite its 
18community organizing and service programming throughout the 
19year; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, The Fiesta del Sol Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship 
21Program has celebrated over a decade of awarding scholarships

1to students from the Southwest side of the city and beyond; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, The Scholarship Program offers students $1,500 
3for college expenses and has given $700,000 to over 450 
4students; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Fiesta del Sol draws over 1 million visitors 
6during the 4-day event, which, in 2013, will be held on July 
725-28 in the neighborhood of Pilsen in Chicago; therefore, be 
8it
  
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
11we recognize and honor the 41st anniversary of Fiesta del Sol; 
12and be it further
  
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
14presented to the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council as a symbol 
15of our respect and esteem.
