| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the congregation | ||||||
| 4 | of Mt. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church on the occasion of | ||||||
| 5 | the church's 190th anniversary on September 15, 2013; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The Cumberland Presbyterian denomination was | ||||||
| 7 | founded in 1810 in Dickson County, Tennessee and was born out | ||||||
| 8 | of the second great awakening in American Christianity; Mt. | ||||||
| 9 | Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church was formally organized | ||||||
| 10 | in 1823, with Rev. Joel Knight as the founding pastor; soon | ||||||
| 11 | after the formation of the society, the members joined together | ||||||
| 12 | and built a log church in Greenville; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The present Mt. Gilead building was built around | ||||||
| 14 | 1867 at a cost of $1,500; several additions have been made to | ||||||
| 15 | the church building, including a foyer, a basement, a west | ||||||
| 16 | addition, and a south addition; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Gerald Jenner has written a history of the Mt. | ||||||
| 18 | Gilead church and cemetery, with the genealogies of several | ||||||
| 19 | families that are buried in the cemetery; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, For many years, a cemetery picnic was held on the | ||||||
| 21 | church grounds at Mt. Gilead to raise funds for upkeep of the | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | cemetery; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Rev. Ward Sussenbach is the current pastor of Mt. | ||||||
| 3 | Gilead; his great-great-great-grandfather was one of the | ||||||
| 4 | charter members of the congregation; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Over 50 pastors have served the congregation of | ||||||
| 6 | Mt. Gilead, with Rev. Harold Kemp holding the longest tenure of | ||||||
| 7 | any pastor, having served the church for 22 years; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Mt. Gilead continues to have Sunday services each | ||||||
| 9 | week in the historic building; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Mt. Gilead hosted many events on September 15, | ||||||
| 11 | 2013 in celebration of the anniversary, including a worship | ||||||
| 12 | service, Sunday school, a potluck dinner, a reflection upon the | ||||||
| 13 | history of the church, and a gospel concert by The Nomads; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Rev. Sussenbach and the congregation of Mt. Gilead | ||||||
| 15 | welcomed community members to attend the events on Sunday as | ||||||
| 16 | they celebrated 190 years of ministry; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 18 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 19 | we congratulate the congregation of Mt. Gilead Cumberland | ||||||
| 20 | Presbyterian Church on the occasion of the church's 190th | ||||||

| 1 | anniversary and wish them continued success in the future; and | ||||||
| 2 | be it further
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 4 | presented to the congregation of Mt. Gilead Cumberland | ||||||
| 5 | Presbyterian Church and their pastor, Rev. Ward Sussenbach, as | ||||||
| 6 | a symbol of our respect and esteem.
