| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to honor Reverend Archibald Mosley |
| 4 | | on his life's accomplishments; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Mosley was born and raised in Carbondale; |
| 6 | | he attended Attucks High School and was planning on attending |
| 7 | | Southern Illinois University upon graduation, before being |
| 8 | | selected for the Marines; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Reverend Mosley was one of the first African |
| 10 | | Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps during |
| 11 | | World War II; he, along with 20,000 other African American |
| 12 | | Marines, was trained in segregated facilities at Montford |
| 13 | | Point, North Carolina from 1942 to 1949 after President |
| 14 | | Franklin D. Roosevelt ended the Marine Corps status as a |
| 15 | | white-only branch of the armed forces; he served on the front |
| 16 | | lines during the invasion of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima |
| 17 | | and, with his fellow Montford Point Marines, was tasked with |
| 18 | | the clean-up at Sasebo and Nagasaki after the dropping of the |
| 19 | | atomic bomb; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Following his time in the military, Reverend |
| 21 | | Mosley attended Southern Illinois University and earned 5 |
| 22 | | college degrees - 2 bachelor's degrees and 2 master's degrees |
