| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the |
| 4 | | MJM Electric Cooperative on the 75th anniversary of their |
| 5 | | cooperative; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The MJM Electric Cooperative was officially |
| 7 | | organized on April 5, 1939 in Carlinville, Illinois, through |
| 8 | | the hard work and dedication of a handful of local residents |
| 9 | | wanting to improve living and farming conditions for themselves |
| 10 | | and their neighbors; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Because of the lack of density, it simply was not |
| 12 | | possible for the for-profit utilities to make a profit serving |
| 13 | | rural areas with only a few farms or homes per mile of electric |
| 14 | | line; with the help of loans from the Rural Electrification |
| 15 | | Administration, these rural people banded together to form |
| 16 | | rural member-owned and member-governed electric cooperatives; |
| 17 | | and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, This group of local residents went door to door |
| 19 | | signing up their neighbors to become members of the MJM |
| 20 | | Electric Cooperative and convincing them that a cooperative |
| 21 | | would bring lights and power to the rural area; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Their hard work paid off and the MJM Electric |
| 2 | | Cooperative's lines were first energized on April 11, 1940, |
| 3 | | initially serving 224 member-owners in Macoupin County; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, The MJM Electric Cooperative continues to |
| 5 | | provides reliable electric service to member-owners in |
| 6 | | Macoupin, Jersey, Montgomery, Bond, Fayette, Greene, and |
| 7 | | Madison counties; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, For 75 years, the MJM Electric Cooperative has |
| 9 | | served its member-owners based on 7 guiding principles: |
| 10 | | voluntary and open membership, member-elected and controlled |
| 11 | | boards of directors, members' economic participation, autonomy |
| 12 | | and independence, education and training, cooperation among |
| 13 | | cooperatives, and concern for community; therefore, be it
|
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 15 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 16 | | we congratulate the MJM Electric Cooperative on its 75th |
| 17 | | anniversary; and be it further
|
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 19 | | presented to the MJM Electric Cooperative as a symbol of our |
| 20 | | esteem and respect.
