HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Village of Teutopolis is celebrating its
3Terquasquicentennial, the 175th anniversary of its founding,
4from July 26 to August 3, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The location of Teutopolis, on the old National
6Road in the northeastern part of Effingham County, was selected
7after 4 months' search through Illinois and Missouri by Clemens
8Uptmor, John Waschefort, and Gerhard Bergfeld in 1837; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Teutopolis was settled beginning in 1839 by
10members of the Deutsche Land-Compagnie, an association of 142
11German immigrant families living in Cincinnati, Ohio; in 2014,
12it is the oldest town in Effingham County; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The arrival of the Franciscan priests and brothers
14in 1858, and the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1861, were key
15events in creating a strong, vital community that takes
16seriously both its relationship with God and its
17responsibilities to educate its children and work for the
18support of its families and cherishes its continuing
19connections with the Franciscans and the School Sisters of
20Notre Dame; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Teutopolis students continually excel in

1academics, always scoring among the top area schools, and far
2above the State average, in annual tests; in athletics,
3Teutopolis schools have won State championships in basketball,
4baseball, and track and too many trophies to count; much of
5this success is due to the efforts of a long line of dedicated
6teachers and coaches; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Teutopolis business community thrives with
8over 100 enterprises, of which almost all are locally owned;
9the village has 58 working people for every 1,001 residents,
10making it one of the busiest towns in the United States; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Over many years, hundreds of men and women from
12Teutopolis have loyally served their country as members of the
13armed forces and 13 have given their lives in conflicts from
14the Civil War to the Vietnam War; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The fraternal and service organizations of
16Teutopolis have donated much time and effort and have
17generously raised and provided funds for a myriad of worthy
18causes in the community, the area, and beyond; these
19organizations include the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club,
20the Teutopolis Community for Progress, the Holy Name Society,
21the Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Daughters of
22America, St. Francis Youth Council, the Catholic Heart Work
23Camp, American Legion Post 924, the Teutopolis Education

1Foundation, and Sportsbackers; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Today, Teutopolis stands as a shining example of
3the results of hard work, self-discipline, genuine care, and
4concern for one's family and neighbors; Teutopolis citizens
5live with respect for the past and vision for the future;
6therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Teutopolis on
10the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the community; and be
11it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the citizens of the Village of Teutopolis as a
14symbol of our respect and esteem.
