2 | | WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the |
3 | | members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened |
4 | | to learn of the death of Otis McDonald of Chicago, who passed |
5 | | away on April 4, 2014; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Otis McDonald was born in Louisiana in 1933; he |
7 | | settled in Chicago in 1952 after serving in the United States |
8 | | Army; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Otis McDonald worked as a janitor for the |
10 | | University of Chicago and worked his way up to maintenance |
11 | | engineer; while working at the U. of C., he earned an associate |
12 | | degree from Kennedy-King College; he retired in 1996; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Otis McDonald was the lead plaintiff in the |
14 | | lawsuit that prompted the landmark United States Supreme Court |
15 | | decision that struck down Chicago's 28-year ban on handguns; |
16 | | and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Otis McDonald felt strongly that he had a duty to |
18 | | stand up for the rights that had been taken away from |
19 | | African-Americans during slavery, including the right to bear |
20 | | arms; and
