2 | WHEREAS, The United States Navy has a proud tradition of | ||||||
3 | service dating back to the Revolutionary War, when the | ||||||
4 | Continental Congress created the Continental Navy to fight on | ||||||
5 | the seas for our nation's independence; following the | ||||||
6 | dissolution of the Continental Navy, the Founding Fathers gave | ||||||
7 | Congress the right to create a navy through the United States | ||||||
8 | Constitution, which culminated in the creation of the Naval Act | ||||||
9 | of 1794 and the launching of the first United States warships | ||||||
10 | in 1797; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The United States Navy has been deployed in all of | ||||||
12 | the United States' great conflicts, fighting for our nation | ||||||
13 | during the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War | ||||||
14 | II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, | ||||||
15 | and the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The United States Navy also performs humanitarian | ||||||
17 | missions throughout the world, helping those in need without | ||||||
18 | pride or prejudice; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The United States Navy is known throughout the | ||||||
20 | world for its strength, courage, and compassion; notable | ||||||
21 | commanders in the United States Navy, including John Paul | ||||||
22 | Jones, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Chester Nimitz, serve as role |

| |||||||
1 | models to naval officers and citizens around the world; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, In a world fraught with peril, the United States | ||||||
3 | of
America has the world's finest Navy, with the ability to | ||||||
4 | project
power across the sea and on shore by virtue of its | ||||||
5 | surface and
subsurface forces, carrier air power, and special | ||||||
6 | warfare teams; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is home to Naval Station | ||||||
8 | Great
Lakes, which hosts the Navy's only Recruit Training | ||||||
9 | Command,
graduating 37,000 men and women annually to become our | ||||||
10 | Navy's
sailors; Illinois is also home to the Naval Hospital | ||||||
11 | Corps School and the Navy's
technical training schools for surf | ||||||
12 | ace warfare excellence at
Training Support Center Great Lakes, | ||||||
13 | graduating more than 25,000
students annually; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Many Illinois citizens have gone to sea in the | ||||||
15 | service of
their country; many Navy ships have also been named | ||||||
16 | for cities within and for our
great State of Illinois, | ||||||
17 | including the USS Illinois and the USS
Springfield; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Thousands of Illinois citizens are
currently | ||||||
19 | serving or have served in the United States Navy at
naval | ||||||
20 | bases, joint forces commands, and Navy Operational Support
| ||||||
21 | units all over the globe; and |

| |||||||
1 | WHEREAS, The thousands of courageous men and women in | ||||||
2 | uniform
stand ready to defend the United States and its | ||||||
3 | interests
through overwhelming force and commitment to their | ||||||
4 | nation
and its citizens; therefore, be it
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
6 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
7 | we designate the week of April 28 - May 4, 2014 as "Navy Week" | ||||||
8 | in the State of Illinois in honor of this fine institution and | ||||||
9 | its many dedicated men and women in uniform; and be it further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to Secretary of the Navy Raymond Mabus as a symbol of | ||||||
12 | our esteem and respect.
