HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Jerry Umanos of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos received his medical training from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Children's Hospital of Michigan; he was also certified by the American Board of Pediatrics; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos spent his career serving children in need, including practicing pediatric medicine at the Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for more than 25 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos and his wife, Jan Schuitema, a teacher, spent the past ten years living in Chicago and Afghanistan in order to care for and teach the neediest children; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was training, teaching, and working beside physician residents, midwives, and community health workers at Cure International Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan to care for over 37,000 sick and injured children and mothers every year; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was instrumental in creating Empowerment Health at Cure International Hospital, a program aimed at teaching Afghan women basic health education and skills to provide health services in their communities; and

WHEREAS, On April 24, 2014, a gunman opened fired at Cure International Hospital, killing 3 Americans, including Dr. Jerry Umanos; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos is survived by his wife and their three children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. Jerry Umanos, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Jerry Umanos as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
