2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lucille | ||||||
4 | "Jackie" Gallagher, who passed away on April 22, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was born on June 7, 1928 in
| ||||||
6 | Chicago to Louis and Lucille Jaacks, the youngest of 3 | ||||||
7 | children; she graduated from St. Genevieve Grammar and | ||||||
8 | Providence High Schools in Chicago, and
attended the School of | ||||||
9 | the Art Institute in Chicago; she married Will Gallagher in | ||||||
10 | 1950 and they became parents of 4 children; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was involved in Democratic | ||||||
12 | politics at the local, State and national levels for her entire | ||||||
13 | adult life, involving her children right alongside her going | ||||||
14 | door-to-door, distributing yard signs, and attending rallies; | ||||||
15 | and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher worked for passage of the Equal | ||||||
17 | Rights Amendment in Illinois, believing that equality for women | ||||||
18 | was essential to the country's future; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was one of the original staff | ||||||
20 | members hired by then-Democratic leader Michael J. Madigan in | ||||||
21 | 1981, and worked for him after he became Speaker of the |

1 | Illinois House of Representatives in 1983; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher served as a key advisor and a | ||||||
3 | tough and straight-talking spokesperson for the Chicago | ||||||
4 | Teachers Union under presidents Jacqueline B. Vaughn and Thomas | ||||||
5 | Reece; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was appointed to head the | ||||||
7 | Illinois Labor Relations Board, a post she held from 2003 until | ||||||
8 | her retirement; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher's commitment to Democratic | ||||||
10 | politics and her belief in women's rightful place in the | ||||||
11 | political arena led her to serve on the founding board of | ||||||
12 | Illinois Women in Leadership, a training program for Democratic | ||||||
13 | women who wish to seek elective office; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher devoted her life to the political | ||||||
15 | process because of her belief in the importance of the process | ||||||
16 | and the ideals of the Democratic party; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher's influence on candidates, | ||||||
18 | legislative staffers, elected officials, and labor leaders | ||||||
19 | will be felt for years to come; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was preceded in death by her |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | parents, and by her son, Paul; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher is survived by her children, | ||||||
3 | Audrey, Hugh, and Jane; her ex-husband, Will; her grandson, | ||||||
4 | James and his fiancee Layla Lewis; and her brothers, Louis and | ||||||
5 | Richard; therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
7 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
8 | we mourn the passing of Jackie Gallagher, and we extend our | ||||||
9 | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
10 | and loved her; and be it further

11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Jackie Gallagher as an expression of | ||||||
13 | our deepest sympathy.
