|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the members of Phi Beta |
| 4 | | Sigma Fraternity on the occasion of the organization's 100th |
| 5 | | anniversary; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard |
| 7 | | University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914 by 3 young |
| 8 | | African-American male students; the Founders, the Honorable A. |
| 9 | | Langston Taylor, the Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and the |
| 10 | | Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter |
| 11 | | fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of |
| 12 | | brotherhood, scholarship, and service and that viewed itself as |
| 13 | | a part of the general community rather than apart from the |
| 14 | | general community; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, From its inception, the Founders of Phi Beta Sigma |
| 16 | | Fraternity also conceived the organization as a mechanism to |
| 17 | | deliver services to the general community; rather than gaining |
| 18 | | skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their |
| 19 | | immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they |
| 20 | | should return their newly acquired skills to the communities |
| 21 | | from which they had come; this deep conviction was mirrored in |
| 22 | | the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For |
| 23 | | Humanity"; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity have been |
| 2 | | instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma |
| 3 | | National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union, |
| 4 | | and the Sigma Beta Club Foundation; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, |
| 5 | | founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the |
| 6 | | sister organization of the Fraternity; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, In furtherance of its goals, Phi Beta Sigma |
| 8 | | Fraternity seeks to strengthen and proactively serve the |
| 9 | | brotherhood as a supportive resource that positively impacts |
| 10 | | the Fraternity's growth and financial solvency; reaffirm and |
| 11 | | maintain a strong commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and |
| 12 | | service; ensure that Fraternity programs are focused and |
| 13 | | committed to serving humanity; create an environment that |
| 14 | | respects the dignity and worth of each brother; exhibit |
| 15 | | integrity and ethical behavior in conducting the Fraternity's |
| 16 | | business and serve as a model for all Greek-letter |
| 17 | | organizations; maintain and improve the Fraternity's |
| 18 | | technological literacy in order to better service its members |
| 19 | | and the community at large; foster and nurture its |
| 20 | | constitutional bond with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; |
| 21 | | encourage a closer and mutually beneficial working |
| 22 | | relationship with fellow Greek-letter organizations, other |
| 23 | | community service organizations, businesses, and governments; |
| 24 | | and select leaders who are committed and have demonstrated |

| 1 | | their ability to lead; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has blossomed |
| 3 | | into an international organization of leaders; its members |
| 4 | | serve as models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the |
| 5 | | people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
|
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 7 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 8 | | we congratulate the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity on the |
| 9 | | occasion of the organization's 100th anniversary and wish them |
| 10 | | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it |
| 11 | | further

| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 13 | | presented to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as a symbol of our |
| 14 | | esteem and respect.
