HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the owners and staff of the Mt. Carmel Daily Republican Register on the occasion of the paper's 175th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The Daily Republican Register is descended from a weekly newspaper, the Mt. Carmel Register, which first reported news to the area on June 11, 1839; and

WHEREAS, The paper began by using the intricate and laborious linotype, where wooden blocks were handpicked piece-by-piece to form the publication; and

WHEREAS, In the late 1870s, a second weekly, the Mt. Carmel Republican, came into being; in 1888, the Republican was purchased by Dan Keen; 11 years later, the paper became a daily publication in Wabash County; and

WHEREAS, The Register's long history extends not only to the paper, but also to the building in which the Register operates and the paper's first recorded publisher; and

WHEREAS, The Register building, looking toward the county courthouse, is a historic structure built in 1848 as the new church for Beauchamp Chapel, a Methodist congregation that included the founders of the City of Mt. Carmel; and

WHEREAS, The Register's first recorded publisher, United States Army Colonel T.S. Bowers, had also made a name for himself; during the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army as a private, ultimately becoming a colonel and assistant adjutant general to General Ulysses S. Grant; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Register is completely computerized; the paper also offers an online e-edition and at-home delivery of the print edition; and

WHEREAS, The Register is staffed by Publisher Phil Summers, Editor Andrea Howe, News Editor Amanda Thombleson, Sports Writer Scott Allen, People Writer Jennifer Loesch, news clerk Steve Williams, advertising staff Sandra Higgins and Joey Luecke, as well as Susan Wiseman at the classified and circulation desk, Bob Tanquary in the accounting department and Jackie Andrews in Human Resources; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate and recognize the owners and staff of the Mt. Carmel Daily Republican Register on the occasion of the paper's 175th anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the staff of the Mt. Carmel Daily Republican Register as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
