2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Erma M. Davis of Peoria, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on April 6, 2013; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis was born on April 2, 1930, in | ||||||
6 | Clarksdale, Mississippi, to E.M. and Cora (Spillman) Moore; she | ||||||
7 | married Charles W. Davis; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis became the executive director of the | ||||||
9 | George Washington Carver Community Center in Peoria in 1966, | ||||||
10 | and during her 28 years of service she spearheaded such notable | ||||||
11 | programs as Carver Center Day Care, the Optometry and Dental | ||||||
12 | Program, the Computer Education Program, the Annual Christmas | ||||||
13 | Basket Giveaway, the Senior Citizens Program, and the College | ||||||
14 | Bound For Excellence Program; with the help of Methodist | ||||||
15 | Medical Center, she created the idea of a Carver Family Health | ||||||
16 | Center to provide medical services for the residents of | ||||||
17 | Peoria's south side; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis had a firm belief in human rights and a | ||||||
19 | concern for all people; she was one of 12 people appointed by | ||||||
20 | the American Health Care System to select an exemplary program | ||||||
21 | that provided health care for disadvantaged people; she was one | ||||||
22 | of the founding members of the Peoria Chapter Urban League |

1 | Guild, later becoming the national president; she was the first | ||||||
2 | African American female to serve on the board of directors of | ||||||
3 | Methodist Medical Center, and was appointed to Ronald Reagan's | ||||||
4 | Task Force on Hunger; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis was a member of First United Methodist | ||||||
6 | Church for more than 40 years, where she served as a lay person | ||||||
7 | to the United Methodist Conference and was involved with the | ||||||
8 | Loaves and Fish Feeding Program; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
10 | her husband; and 2 brothers; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Erma Davis is survived by her children, Sharon | ||||||
12 | (Allen) Kilgore, Robert (Carmen) Davis, Michele Davis, and Lisa | ||||||
13 | Davis; her goddaughter, Dr. Lona C. Bibbs; her grandchildren, | ||||||
14 | Aaron (Amanda) Kilgore and Evan Kilgore; her great-grandchild, | ||||||
15 | Alexander Davis Kilgore; her sisters, Ruby (Kenneth) Williams | ||||||
16 | and Gaye (Alvin) Wilson; her brother, Eugene M. Williams; and | ||||||
17 | many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Erma Davis, and we extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
21 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
22 | further
