|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Cal Sutker of Skokie, who passed away on |
4 | | April 25, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Cal Sutker enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, |
6 | | serving in Germany, France, and Austria during World War II; he |
7 | | was in the battalion that first entered the Dachu concentration |
8 | | camp and liberated its prisoners; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Cal Sutker began his political career in 1965 when |
10 | | he was elected to the Skokie Village Board, where he helped to |
11 | | pass one of the first fair housing ordinances in the State; he |
12 | | served 3 2-year terms in the Illinois House of Representatives |
13 | | and 8 years on the Cook County Board; in 1973, he was elected |
14 | | Democratic Committeeman of Niles Township, a position he held |
15 | | for 33 years; he also served as Illinois State Central |
16 | | Committeeman, chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party, and |
17 | | Democratic National Committeeman; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Cal Sutker's contributions to politics and his |
19 | | community are everywhere to be found; he was a member of the |
20 | | Caucus Party that has held all of the Skokie government seats |
21 | | for decades; he was instrumental in the creation of the North |
22 | | Shore Sculpture Park at the east end of the village and the |

1 | | Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, Cal Sutker was known for accumulating a large |
3 | | library of books and it was not unheard of for those who spent |
4 | | time with him to walk away with a book from his collection; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Cal Sutker was the dearly beloved husband of the |
6 | | late Phyllis (nee Twery); devoted father of Sharon Sutker |
7 | | McGowan (Jim McGowan), Shelley Sutker-Dermer (Kenneth Dermer), |
8 | | Edie Sue Sutker (David Richmond), and Allen Sutker (Karen |
9 | | Sutker); the loving grandfather of Jennifer and Joshua McGowan, |
10 | | Elana and Jake Dermer, and Dani, Niki, Tommy, and Teddy Sutker; |
11 | | the dear brother of Irwin (the late Carla) Sutker and Ada |
12 | | (Beryl) Rabinowitz; the brother-in-law of Marsha Kline and the |
13 | | late David Kline; and he will be fondly remembered by many |
14 | | nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends; |
15 | | therefore, be it

16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Cal Sutker, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, |
19 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to the family of Cal Sutker as an expression of our |
22 | | deepest sympathy.
