| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of George Morris, Jr., who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | June 15, 2013; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was born on November 15, 1924, | ||||||
| 6 | in West Frankfort; his parents were George Sr. and Laura | ||||||
| 7 | Morris; he married Lola F. (nee Melvin) Morris in 1946, in | ||||||
| 8 | Pickett, Arkansas; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his country with pride | ||||||
| 10 | in the United States Navy during World War II in the | ||||||
| 11 | Asiatic-Pacific Theater; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. began working in the coal mines | ||||||
| 13 | in 1947 with the Franklin County Coal Company in Royalton; he | ||||||
| 14 | subsequently worked for the Freeman Coal Company before | ||||||
| 15 | transferring to the Peabody Coal Company in 1971; while working | ||||||
| 16 | for Peabody, he worked as the safety manager at Eagle Mine in | ||||||
| 17 | Shawneetown; in 1977, he began working at the Morris and Sons | ||||||
| 18 | Coal Company as the personnel and safety director; his last | ||||||
| 19 | employment was at Kenellis Energies Inc. in Galatia, where he | ||||||
| 20 | worked out of the corporate office and handled all labor | ||||||
| 21 | matters for the company; he also served as president of the | ||||||
| 22 | local district of United Mine Workers of America and taught | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | mine safety classes at Southeastern Illinois College; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his community as a | ||||||
| 3 | member of Denning Township Board and coached little league | ||||||
| 4 | baseball when he was younger; he was also a member of West | ||||||
| 5 | Frankfort Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5764; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| 7 | parents; his wife, Lola; his sisters, Thelma, Ruth, and Maxine; | ||||||
| 8 | his brothers, Vernon, Albert, Doyle, and Harold Morris; and his | ||||||
| 9 | two infant siblings; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. is survived by his daughter, | ||||||
| 11 | Melanie (Gerald) Walker; his son, Rex (Linda) Morris; his | ||||||
| 12 | grandchildren, Chad Robison and Jamiel Morris; and his | ||||||
| 13 | great-grandchildren, Jordan and Hunter Robison and Kane and Nia | ||||||
| 14 | Morris; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
| 17 | family and friends, mourn the passing of George Morris, Jr.; | ||||||
| 18 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the family of George Morris, Jr. as an expression | ||||||
| 21 | of our sympathy.
