SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Robert E. Manning, Jr. of Peoria, who passed away on July 22, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was born on November 16, 1931, in Peoria, to Robert E. and Catherine Irene (Gorman) Manning; he graduated from the Spalding Institute in 1949, where he captained the football, basketball, and baseball teams during his senior year and was selected as an all-city quarterback in 1948; he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated from Bradley University in 1953, lettering in varsity baseball at both schools; he married Lois M. Wilson in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, on April 25, 1953; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. continued his baseball career beyond high school and college; he played collegiate summer leagues in Madison, Wisconsin; Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; he played professional baseball from 1953 to 1954 for the Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants organizations in Peoria (Peoria Chiefs); Tampa, Florida; and Olean, New York; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1960 and practiced law in Peoria from 1960 to 1977; he was assistant State's Attorney in Peoria County from 1960 to 1967 before being appointed State's Attorney from 1967 to 1968; he was selected as an associate circuit judge in the 10th Circuit and a circuit judge in 1980; he retired in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of many civic and professional associations, including the Peoria County Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, the Illinois Judges Association, the Spalding and Peoria Notre Dame High School Booster Clubs, the University of Notre Dame National Monogram Club, the Notre Dame Club of Peoria, the Bradley University Letterman and Chiefs Club, the Landmark Racquet & Health Club, Knights of Columbus-Spalding Council, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #20; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and served on the finance committee; and

WHEREAS, Following the passing of his first wife, Robert Manning, Jr. married Rosemary Donnelly Crowley on March 24, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Sharon O'Shaughnessy; and

WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Michael Manning, Lauren (Tom) Donlan, Linda Manning, Angela (Dan) Aeschliman, Robert (Kristen) Manning, James Manning, and Paul (Katie) Manning; his 18 grandchildren; his 8 great-grandchildren; his numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; his step-children, Karen (Bob) Metzinger, Debi (John) Redington, James (Gail) Crowley, William III (Laura) Crowley, and John (Chris) Crowley; his 13 step-grandchildren; and his 2 great-step-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Robert E. Manning, Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Robert Manning, Jr. as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
