SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Robert E. Manning, Jr. of Peoria, who
4passed away on July 22, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was born on November 16, 1931,
6in Peoria, to Robert E. and Catherine Irene (Gorman) Manning;
7he graduated from the Spalding Institute in 1949, where he
8captained the football, basketball, and baseball teams during
9his senior year and was selected as an all-city quarterback in
101948; he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated
11from Bradley University in 1953, lettering in varsity baseball
12at both schools; he married Lois M. Wilson in Oshawa, Ontario,
13Canada, on April 25, 1953; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. continued his baseball career
15beyond high school and college; he played collegiate summer
16leagues in Madison, Wisconsin; Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada;
17and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; he played professional baseball
18from 1953 to 1954 for the Cleveland Indians and the New York
19Giants organizations in Peoria (Peoria Chiefs); Tampa,
20Florida; and Olean, New York; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. graduated from the University
22of Notre Dame Law School in 1960 and practiced law in Peoria

1from 1960 to 1977; he was assistant State's Attorney in Peoria
2County from 1960 to 1967 before being appointed State's
3Attorney from 1967 to 1968; he was selected as an associate
4circuit judge in the 10th Circuit and a circuit judge in 1980;
5he retired in 1997; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of many civic and
7professional associations, including the Peoria County Bar
8Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the American
9Judicature Society, the Illinois Judges Association, the
10Spalding and Peoria Notre Dame High School Booster Clubs, the
11University of Notre Dame National Monogram Club, the Notre Dame
12Club of Peoria, the Bradley University Letterman and Chiefs
13Club, the Landmark Racquet & Health Club, Knights of
14Columbus-Spalding Council, and the Benevolent and Protective
15Order of Elks Lodge #20; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of St. Bernard
17Catholic Church and served on the finance committee; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Following the passing of his first wife, Robert
19Manning, Jr. married Rosemary Donnelly Crowley on March 24,
202001; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was preceded in death by his
22first wife, Lois; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Sharon

2    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. is survived by his wife,
3Rosemary; his children, Michael Manning, Lauren (Tom) Donlan,
4Linda Manning, Angela (Dan) Aeschliman, Robert (Kristen)
5Manning, James Manning, and Paul (Katie) Manning; his 18
6grandchildren; his 8 great-grandchildren; his numerous
7cousins, nieces, and nephews; his step-children, Karen (Bob)
8Metzinger, Debi (John) Redington, James (Gail) Crowley,
9William III (Laura) Crowley, and John (Chris) Crowley; his 13
10step-grandchildren; and his 2 great-step-grandchildren;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Robert E. Manning, Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Robert Manning, Jr. as an expression
19of our deepest sympathy.
