SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Bertha Lee Burns, who passed away on July 14, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Burns was born on July 18, 1937 in Hughes, Arkansas; her parents were the Rev. Tony and Lucy Burnett; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Burns accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Pastor W.E. McKinney at Mount Pisbe Missionary Baptist Church in Croverville, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, In the early 1960s, Bertha Burns relocated from Arkansas to Chicago, where she became a certified nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital; she served faithfully as a nurse for many years; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Burns enjoyed fishing, gardening, and cooking for everyone; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Burns was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Wilson "Cadillac Bill" Rodgers; her extended child, Fred "Mane Mane", Jr.; and her siblings, Nurse Watkins, Hiltha Miller, and James Burnett; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Burns is survived by her children, Amos, Dudley, Helen (John) Franklin, Dean, Feltain "Tina" (Yosef) Beard, Pamela (Paul) Huff, Monica (Michael) Heagle, Shanice, and Dyreck; her extended children, Pat Towns and Debra Ann (Floyd) Tucker; her siblings, Mattie Burnett, Ruth Brown, Ora Brown, Delores Burnett, Olivia Burnett, Lincoln Burnett, and Louvenia (Pastor Robin Hood) Dexter Burnett; and her nieces, nephews, grandchildren, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of Bertha Lee Burns; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Bertha Burns as an expression of our sympathy.
