2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of the Reverend Patrick J. O'Malley, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on July 5, 2013; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Father O'Malley was born in Chicago on April 27, | ||||||
6 | 1932, to Patrick and Mary O'Malley; he attended several | ||||||
7 | Catholic elementary schools before graduating from Our Lady | ||||||
8 | Help of Christians School; he was a graduate of Quigley | ||||||
9 | Preparatory Seminary and the University of Saint Mary of the | ||||||
10 | Lake-Mundelein Seminary, where he earned his Licentiate of | ||||||
11 | Sacred Theology in Religion; he was ordained by Cardinal | ||||||
12 | Stritch on May 3, 1957; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Father O'Malley began serving as Assistant | ||||||
14 | Superintendent at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines in 1957; | ||||||
15 | from 1962 to 1968, he was the Assistant Pastor at Saint | ||||||
16 | Sebastian and the Assistant Pastor and Administrator at Saint | ||||||
17 | Jarlath; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Father O'Malley always showed interest in | ||||||
19 | supporting priests and seminarians; he was one of the founders | ||||||
20 | of the Association of Chicago Priests, and, in June 1968, he | ||||||
21 | was elected the first President of the National Federation of | ||||||
22 | Priests' Councils; he received the John XXIII Award from the |

1 | Association of Chicago Priests in recognition of his leadership | ||||||
2 | and was instrumental in developing "team ministry" within the | ||||||
3 | Archdiocese; in 1970, he began to serve as a part-time member | ||||||
4 | of the Priests Personnel Board; he also served on the Pastor's | ||||||
5 | Review Board and as an Archdiocesan Consultor; he wrote | ||||||
6 | "Perspectives on the Scriptures", a regular feature in the | ||||||
7 | Archdiocese's newspaper, "Catholic New World"; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, In 1981, Father O'Malley was named pastor of Saint | ||||||
9 | Celestine Parish in Elmwood Park and served in that capacity | ||||||
10 | until 1991; he then began a 6-year stint as the Vicar for | ||||||
11 | Priests; he joined the faculty of the University of Saint Mary | ||||||
12 | of the Lake-Mundelein Seminary in 1997 as a Spiritual Director | ||||||
13 | for seminarians; and

14 | WHEREAS, Father O'Malley is the beloved son of the late | ||||||
15 | Patrick and Mary O'Malley; the loving brother of John (Pat), | ||||||
16 | Gerald (Peg), the late Marion (Tom) O'Donnell, and the late Tom | ||||||
17 | (the late Ann) O'Malley; the fond nephew of the late Sister | ||||||
18 | Catherine Heraty (Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary); the | ||||||
19 | cherished uncle to 20 nieces and nephews; and the great-uncle | ||||||
20 | of 56; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
23 | the Reverend Patrick J. O'Malley, and extend our sincere |

1 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
2 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of Father O'Malley as an expression of | ||||||
5 | our deepest sympathy.
