SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of David Anthony Bozeman, Sr., who passed away on July 7, 2013; and

WHEREAS, David Bozeman, Sr. attended Dunbar Elementary School and Clark Junior High School before graduating from East St. Louis Senior High School in 1975; he subsequently enrolled at Southern Illinois University in the fall of 1975; and

WHEREAS, As a child, David Bozeman, Sr. worked at Bozeman's Confectionery for his parents until they sold the confectionery in 1977; he later worked for the United States Postal Service from November 18, 1978 to October 17, 2003; he served as postmaster of the Caseyville Post Office from June 2, 1990 until his retirement and as postmaster of the Godfrey Post Office from February 20, 1993 until his retirement; while employed at the Postal Service, he received many service awards; and

WHEREAS, In 2012, David Bozeman, Sr. served as the chair for the group of Illinois volunteers that built the National Baptist Congress Habitat for Humanity Home in St. Louis, Missouri; after Hurricane Katrina, he recruited Illinois Laymen to go to Louisiana and hosted annual "Shepherd vs. Sheep" basketball games to raise funds for the Second Chance Shelter; he also served on the board of New Salem Place, a Home for Seniors; and

WHEREAS, David Bozeman, Sr. served as president of the New Salem District Laymen Auxiliary from 2000 to 2008 and as president of the Illinois State Baptist General Laymen's Ministry; and

WHEREAS, David Bozeman, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Corine Bozeman, Sr.; his brother, Charles Leach; his sister, Denise Bozeman; and his mother-in-law, Pearline Haire; and

WHEREAS, David Bozeman, Sr. is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his sons, David A. Bozeman, Jr., and Rev. Michael (Nia) Owens; his grandchildren, Gavin and Micah; his brother, Charles (Carlon) Bozeman, Jr.; his sisters, Coretta Bozeman, Dr. Gloria B. (Brent) Herndon, O. Jean Pittman, Barbara (Alonzo) Monigan, Charlene Stamps, and Trueal Wheeler; his stepbrothers, Jerry (Luetricha) Wood and Robert (Agnes) Wood; his brother-in-law, Johnnie (Arleatha) Haire; his god-children, Brittany Wince, Reginald Wince II, Isaiah Williams, and Symone Griffin; his special parents, Rev. and Mrs. Norman E. Owens; his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; his fellow Laymen; his St. John family; and his many other relatives and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of David Anthony Bozeman, Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of David Bozeman, Sr. as an expression of our sympathy.
