2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Lillian Marshall Burris of Milford, | ||||||
4 | Delaware, who passed away on April 8, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris was born in 1919 in Lewes, Delaware | ||||||
6 | to Joseph L. and Sue Watts Marshall; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris graduated from Lewes High School in | ||||||
8 | 1937 and the University of Delaware in 1941; she subsequently | ||||||
9 | taught at Caesar Rodney School for one year until the outbreak | ||||||
10 | of World War II, when she married John E. "Jack" Burris; after | ||||||
11 | the war, the couple settled in Milford, Delaware; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris was a stay at home mother who | ||||||
13 | dedicated herself to raising her 4 children and participating | ||||||
14 | in numerous community activities; she served on the Delmarva | ||||||
15 | Boy Scouts Advisory Board and the Girl Scouts Advisory Boards | ||||||
16 | and was a member of the Parent-Teachers Association; she served | ||||||
17 | as Chairperson of the Delaware Federation of Women's Clubs | ||||||
18 | Field Service project and as Education Chairperson for the | ||||||
19 | Milford New Century Club, where she administered the Club's | ||||||
20 | Hirsch Fund for disadvantaged people for 20 years; she was a | ||||||
21 | member of the Board of Kent-Sussex County's Mancus Foundation | ||||||
22 | for Handicapped Persons and a charter member of the Milford |

1 | Housing Corporation; she was a Trustee of Wesley College and a | ||||||
2 | member of the University of Delaware Alumni Board; she was a | ||||||
3 | member of the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a Booth | ||||||
4 | Chairperson with her husband, where her family and employees of | ||||||
5 | Burris Foods cooked chicken barbecue dinners at the annual | ||||||
6 | Milford Hospital Fair for over 30 years; she was also a trustee | ||||||
7 | of the Children's Beach House Board for 50 years; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris and her husband were chosen as | ||||||
9 | "Citizen of the Year" twice by the Milford Chamber of Commerce | ||||||
10 | and received the United Way's Alexis de Tocqueville Society | ||||||
11 | Award; she received the distinguished honor of Delaware's | ||||||
12 | Mother of the Year in 1992 and the "Outstanding Alumnae of the | ||||||
13 | Year" award from the University of Delaware in 1997; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris was an active member of Avenue | ||||||
15 | United Methodist Church in Milford, Delaware for many years; | ||||||
16 | she taught Sunday school for 18 years and served as a member of | ||||||
17 | the Administrative Board, President of the United Methodist | ||||||
18 | Women's Society, Parsonage Committee Co-Chair, and Council of | ||||||
19 | Ministries Counselor with Youth Fellowship; she was also active | ||||||
20 | in the United Methodist Women's Circle; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris enjoyed sandbars on Lewes Beach in | ||||||
22 | the summer, football games at the University of Delaware in the | ||||||
23 | fall, the extremely cold and windy days of winter in Delaware, |

1 | cooking, and spending time with her family and friends; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris was preceded in death by her | ||||||
3 | parents; her husband, John E. "Jack" Burris; her son, Robert D. | ||||||
4 | Burris; and her sister, Sue Preston Dean; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Lillian Burris is survived by her daughter, Lilla | ||||||
6 | (Bob) Hoopman; a daughter-in-law, Susan Burris; sons, John | ||||||
7 | (Cathy) Burris and Howard (Debbie) Burris; a brother, T. | ||||||
8 | Rowland (Marian) Marshall; a sister, Mother Virginia Marshall; | ||||||
9 | 15 grandchildren, including Sarah Burris Lauzen, who is married | ||||||
10 | to United States Marine Corps Captain Theodore Lauzen, who is | ||||||
11 | the son of retired Illinois State Senator Chris Lauzen; 30 | ||||||
12 | great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; | ||||||
13 | therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her | ||||||
16 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Lillian Marshall | ||||||
17 | Burris; and be it further
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to the family of Lillian Burris as an expression of | ||||||
20 | our sympathy.
