SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Anna Hayden Townsend of Chicago; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Anna Townsend was born in Cythianna, Kentucky on
5February 20, 1923 to Ed and Katie Hayden; she graduated from
6Western High School in Paris in 1941 and attended Kentucky
7State College before joining the Women's Army Corp in 1943; she
8married Frank Townsend in 1946 and they had 3 children,
9Patricia, Cleveland, and Lavelle; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Anna Townsend was a licensed cosmetologist; she
11retired in 1993 from the Chicago Police Department after 31
12years of service as a data entry specialist; she worked with
13co-workers to start the AFSCME union local for civilians at the
14Chicago Police Department central headquarters; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Anna Townsend believed in getting involved in her
16community and local politics; she joined the Young Democrats in
17the early 1960s; she served as a board member of the Henry
18Booth House, as a Brownie and Intermediate Girl Scout troop
19leader and Boy Scout den mother, and she actively participated
20in the Parent-Teacher Associations in the schools that her
21children attended; she volunteered with the March of Dimes, the
22Cancer Society, the United Negro College Fund, the Urban

1League, the Renaissance Court in the Chicago Cultural Center,
2and The South Shore Opera Guild; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Anna Townsend was a resident of the South Shore
4neighborhood for the past 42 years; she was a life-long member
5of the Methodist Church, and, most recently, a member of South
6Shore United Methodist Church; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Anna Townsend is survived by her brother, Paul
8Hayden; her daughter, Patricia Townsend Knazze; her son,
9Cleveland Townsend (Theresa); and her granddaughters, Lisa
10Knazze Washington (Walter, Jr.), Kaira, and Kealy Townsend;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Anna Hayden Townsend, and extend our sincere condolences to her
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Anna Townsend as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
